Question 2
1988 chrysler fifth avenue overheating?...  It only has 71,000 actual miles and the thermostat is showing it overheating but it doesn't seem to be and the heater isn't heating up.

Answers
1)   The first thing to check is the coolant level in the radiator. Because you said 5th Ave rather than New Yorker, I am assuming that you have the rear wheel drive model, with the 318 CID engine.

With the engine cold, open the radiator cap and make sure that the radiator is full. Fill it to the top with coolant (50/50 antifreeze and water) and fill the overflow bottle to the cold mark. Start the car, and wait until the thermostat opens, and add additional coolant as needed. Put the radiator cap back on tightly and allow the car to warm up. Check to see if you now have heat.

If the coolant level is full, most likely the impellers on the water pump have failed, and the pump will need to be replaced. It is not that hard of a job, but you will have to remove the fan and fan clutch, and the radiator shroud. You will also have to pull the alternator and bracket. - fire4511

2)   Most important to check t-stat & heater control valve - John

3)   fill the rad full of water take off the cap the and take the lower hose off the water should gush out not dribble out that would be a clogged rad - mjmik1

Question 3
I have a 1994 Chrysler LHS... And it's not starting... The battery works fine...?...  When I turn the key all the lights and electric stuff turns on... But nuthing... It don't start...

Answers
1)   You may have a bad starter or possibly a loose battery cable. - C-Tech

2)   Possibly a bad starter-although a battery can be weak enough not to start a car but still have enough juice to power the radio and lights. First thing to do is check your battery cables, where they attach to the battery. Are they tight? Are they corroded, with a white powdery covering on them? If they are corroded and dirty clean them off. Dirty battery cables can cause a car to not start. - Starship Pain

3)   Does the engine crank when you try to start it, just click, or nothing at all?

If it cranks but won't start, then it could be a fuel pump, an ASD relay, clogged fuel filter, bad crank or cam sensor, broken timing belt (if it's a 3.5 liter engine), or something else.

If it just clicks, then it could be a weak battery that still has enough power to turn the lights and everything else on, but not enough to turn the starter, corroded battery terminals (including a rusty ground connection), a loose battery cable connection, a bad starter, a locked engine, or some other weird problem.

If nothing at all, first thing to do is to either go to the dealer, or call them with your VIN and see if there's an open recall on your vehicle. There was recall for a transmission wiring rub that would cause a short in the safety start switch. That could make it think the car is in a gear and won't let it start, so no clicking or cranking. (There's also a recall for fuel rails leaking, so it'd be a good idea to have them check for recalls anyway)

Could also be the ignition switch, a weak battery, a loose cable to the starter or a blown fuse or some other problem.

A weak battery should cause all the lights to dim a lot when you try to start the car.

Battery cable can be visually inspected and cleaned, if there's any corrosion on the cables, clean them off, you can buy some special cleaning spray, or you can mix a little bit of baking soda in water and just pour it over the connections (A can of regular Coke will also clean them, but that's a waste of a good can of Coke).

The ASD can be diagnosed by switching it with another relay (the A/C clutch relay is the same). The relay is in the fuse/relay block under the hood and the cover should have a chart indicating what the location of each one is.

Most of the other problems will require proper diagnosis, and it will pay to have someone properly diagnose it for you. - Mark B

Question 4
i have a 1998 chyrsler concord that the alarm is got the motor in lock down?...  the engine will not turn over . everthing works battery is good. does anybody know how to reset the factary alarm with out a scaner????????????????

Answers
1)   i have a 98 concorde if you do not have the alarm key ring you have to unlock the car on the front passenger side. i have to always unlock my car that way or my alarm system will go off. sounds like the anti-theft system is engaged (automatic shut down relay). if that don't help i would get under the hood to the main fuse box and pull out all the main fuses and disconnect the battery to see if it will reset. - Anthony

2)   Do you have one of those keys with a chip in it?? if that is the case try this,,, disconnect the battery for two hours, you may have a problem with the key and may need to put an scanner,
good luck.. - class4

3)   First, lets clear a few things up here, the ASD relay (Auto Shut Down) is a safety device. When the vehicle is in an accident, it cuts off power to the ignition system and fuel pump, in other words, it removes spark and fuel from the engine. It will not prevent the starter from spinning.

Also, if you have the Sentry key system (the keys have a grey plastic head on them), then if there's a problem with one key, try using a different key. But, it will go in lockout mode if you try a bad key a few times unsuccessfully. Let the car sit for an hour or two (with the battery connected!), this will let it run down the timer for the lockout mode. Sure, you can disconnect the battery, but you lose all of your settings (such as radio presets, and any personalized settings on the car).

Now, if it's not starting, and not even cranking, chances are it's something else because the Sentry system will normally let it start, then die within a few seconds.

Try unlocking the passenger side door if the alarm is being triggered (horn will blow and lights will flash when alarm is triggered). IF the alarm isn't being triggered, you have a different problem that could be any one of several different things. It'd be best to have it properly diagnosed instead of chasing the problem by replacing a bunch of different things before knowing for sure what's wrong. - Mark B
