is a 2001 pt cruiser a good car with 168k miles?...  me and my gf are having a baby anytime now an we only have one car (2006 mustang 2dr) which is mine, i go to school and work so we are looking to get her a 4 door car. we want spend $2300 our comfort zone, and $3000 would be the max but we would have to use all our money in our savings which we don't because we might need it for the baby there is a pt cruiser for sale looks good shape only thing is 168k miles would this be a good buy for $2100

Answers
1)   i dont think it was a good car when new...sooo..look for a honda civic,,but for 3K your gona buy headachs. - pedro7of9

2)   goto car specific forums for this type of question

you will read up on owners who has first hand knowledge/ experiences with any problems that you may run into before actually buying the vehicle
------------------------------------

it's good that you're thinking of getting a 4 door/ FWD car for the baby; the back seat of those mustangs suck when you have to put a rear facing seat behind you (i would normally put it on the passenger side rear)
------------------------------------

if it has a turbo, stay away from it because it will surely be abused

if they have the maintenance records up to date, then i guess it's a good buy

the main and most expensive part that should have been taken care of is the timing belt/ water pump set... - ricebike

3)   I own a 2003 PT Cruiser and I love it. I have never had any problems with it. Just regular maintenance stuff like new brakes once, new battery, stuff like that. I bought my car new in September 2002 and I still love it! I would make sure that the car has been taken care of before I bought it. I think it would be a good family car (My family is just me, my husband, and a dog) and I have hauled all kinds of stuff in it. I squeezed a 6ft. tall living pine tree into it once! I have nothing but good things about the PT Cruiser and it makes me sad that they no longer make them. I don't know what I'll do when mine finally wears out....hopefully in another 20 or 30 years! - Rachel

4)   It's 10 years old and 168k is a lot of miles. I would go with pedro on this one. - Jackolantern

5)   i wouldn't recommend that, in this type of situation look for a honda or a toyota, they are the only ones dependable enough, trust me they last. so look for a honda or a toyota good luck! - Zakaryah A

is the chrysler 440 big block the only 440 engine chrysler made? is there any variations in them?...

Answers
1)   There were several variants of the 440. The most notorious for performance was the 440 6-pack. Check my sources below for full descriptions. The Hemis were more powerful but required constant tinkering to stay in tune and reliable. Stellar motors though. - Joe

2)   Joe has the answer. 440's were great motors, however they were known for their oil pump failure and it would almost always take out the bearings when it went out. The 440 was also the only engine that the oil pump could be removed and replaced from the engine without removing the pan. It attached through the outside of the block on the left front of the engine. I have changed a few. - Jackolantern

Drove my 2000 chrysler sebring very low on gas on a cold day. after fueling it drove for a bit and cut off.?...  Now it will not turn over. What could be the problem

Answers
1)   fulepump went bad.the gas is what keeps the pump from over heating and when you ran it that low on gas the pump started to get hot and it was just lick that it ran for a little while.on. - kawasaki

2)   sounds to me like you might of froze a gas line, if it got that cold if not i would check the starter. or even possibly water in the tank. i would go to a store like walmart get a bottle of water dry from the automotive department put that in the gas tank and it should do the trick if it is water. if its a frozen gas line your gonna have to warm that car up find a garage with heat or you could rent a heated storage area.put it in there for a couple days. if its the starter most of the time it would grind and cut off when you try to start but not all the time. it could have just went out find your cylinoid touch the black bolt and red bolt together with a screwdriver see if it starts that way if it does. look into your cylinoid being bad. hope i helped a lil - sham

3)   You might have a few problems. First of all, when you put fuel in your car ,before you insert the fuel nozzle in your tank, always look in the nozzle to see if there is snow in it. This will shoot into your tank and turn into water, thus freezing in the fuel system. You need to put some fuel line anti freeze. The other problem you need to give more explanation. Like is the battery dead now ? Does the engine turn over? Is the alternator belt on or loose? Battery cables dirty? - Donny

plymouth voyager shimmy / shake?

Question 1
plymouth voyager shimmy / shake?...  i have a plymouth voyager 1997 has a shimmy in front end only when accelerating ive replaced cvc joins & tierods any ideas ?

Answers
1)   tires struts - wimpy

2)   My best suggestion is find a reliable shop that offers free estimates and have them show you and explain exactly what is faulty. One thing you can do is move the steering wheel slowly left and then right see if you can feel something in the steering wheel or hear noises bec that could be a strut problem.Check the tires over closely be sure that their the proper tire pressures, also that the tires arent wearing funny or worn bec that too can cause that problem , plus tires that aren't balanced properly or a front end that isn't aligned properly or is loose can cause that too.Put the vehicles emg brake on , jack up the front end, use stands and then try holding the front left wheel at 3 and 9 oclock with your hands then try moving the wheel with each hand see if any play exists, check the front end parts when doing this to spot the problem.Do the same at 6 and 12 oclock and then spin the wheel listen to it and watch how freely it moves etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way many different things can cause that problem and if you see any flat or dried out or damaged rubber boots on a ball joint etc that can tell you there could be a problem with that part.Just be sure to check the tires fully and that the wheels are balanced, plus ask about the rims be sure their not warped etc.I'd also check the engine mounts, check the brakes over closely especially on the front end, plus check the rack and pinion and be sure that it's mounted solidly. - helpful bob

3)   You will need to get under your van again to check the inner cv joint to see if it is loose(worn). If you replaced them with rebuilt joints did you check the replacements to make sure they were the same length. A problem with rebuilt joints.
Another thing to look for would be a warped rotor and a seizing calliper. This issue is most notable when accelerating when merging with traffic from a highway ramp. - clowdy4

4)   Did you replace the entire shaft and joints on both sides. CV joints are the number 1 cause of shimmying on acceleration. If the CV joints are good, then you have a tire with a slipped belt. Also if you have bad motor mounts, it will cause this condition. All motor mounts (there are three)should be replaced at 100,000 miles to keep the drive line in line with the axles front wheels. - Jackolantern

Question 2
Should I buy a Plymouth Duster?...  I've been wanting to buy a classic car for years now, and I was thinking about buying an old duster like the 73 my Dad had when I was a kid. Buy I don't know alot about older cars, and needed some pointers.
Are there specific things to look for when buying a classic car, or a Duste specifically? Are there any common problems with dusters? What would be a good price to pay for one? (restored and not) And while I've never done it, would it be worth it to buy and restore one myself?
Or maybe for some reason you'd recommend me to look into other car choices.

Hope to get answers soon.

Answers
1)   I am not really an expert on the duster, but i do own some classic muscle. A big thing to look at when buying older cars is rust. Rust around the fenders and in the Engine compartment can really kill the resale value of the car, and damaged body panels on older cars can really be a pain to replace if your attempting to restore with original parts. like i said, my experience with a Dusters and Plymouths in general is limited, i'm more knowledgeable fords, and i'm just kinda speaking generally here. - Ryan Against

2)   ask your dad - Camaro Hopper

3)   I would think rust would be the main issue. Don't buy anything newer than a '73. Unless you want a hot rod, look for the slant 6, great engine. I had a '70 Valiant, similar to the Dart, but the Duster was a very similar car. The car was basic and bullet proof and quite fast for a 6 cylinder. - doane_nut

4)   the biggest problem is, as others have indicated, is rust.

If you new to the car hobby, be aware restorations are, as a general rule expensive, and you are generally better off (from a $ perspective) buying a restored car than restore one yourself.

I agree with one of the other writers that if you are purchasing a Duster, a 73 should be the newest you should look at (a 70 or 71 would be a bit better)

It is a great time to buy with the economy down - you should be able to find a top notch car for around $10k. Make sure you have it looked at carefully by experts before you buy and don't buy the first one you see. Look around.

Answers
1)   Sounds like a fuel related problem. You may want to get professional help. - badbill1941

2)   Have a full diagnostic test scan performed by a mechanic or get a free scan done at a parts store etc.I'd want to test the fuel pressure, perform a compression test, check the vac hoses, vac lines, rotar, coil, cap, air filter, clean the throttle body/treat the fuel system, check the egr valve and any devices connected up to it, go over any and all wiring harness's especially the harness's that are located where their subject extreme heat bec a wire could be melted or damaged or corroded internally.

That vehicle may have problems with it's starter/charging wiring and connections from the battery, starter, alternator, engine block ground and any chassis or frame grounds.I'd highly suspect that unless someone has fully over hauled and replaced the main charging/starting system wiring that your vehicle is in need of it.You can go over all the connections, wire o-ring connectors, all the ground surfaces with a wire brush , sandpaper etc and either clean the mounting screws/bolts/nuts extremely well or replace them.Note sometimes it's just best to create or make brand new grounds using new wiring, o-ring connectors etc instead of trying to get the really rusty/corroded screws etc out.

That has a comp system and again the harness, wiring , grounds going to the main comp etc could be weak or faulty.Plus the comp uses certain grounds to feed ground signals to different sensors/comps etc so the comp's grounds is very vital and so are the positive 12 volt feeds from fuses , fuse box ,ignition, relays, etc.In fact if the vehicle was mine and I planned on driving it awhile I'd be getting a ground chart location diagram that will tell you where all the in vehicle, under the hood, dash area, trunk etc grounds are.I'd replace them especially the ones on the chassis, frame etc that are subject to extreme temperatures and moister etc.You could patch new grounds to the old ones if their cleaned/prepared and soldered then sealed.

The sensors plug in connectors may have rust or corrosion , again check/clean all the wiring and connections fully, watch for any wires that might have been fixed/spliced in the past. Also note that plugs or connectors can become loose or faulty due to vibrations, moister etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way when you installed the store bought spark-plugs were they factory recommended pre-spark gapped plugs , they probably were and it's not uncommon to find the new plugs aren't pre-gapped properly that's one reason why the spark gaps should be always checked as well as the whole new spark-plug before installing them.
A full diagnostic test should dectect the problem or at least help to narrow down the problem but really the main comp=PCM should of picked up or detected some kind of problem within the different devices and circuits but sometimes faulty grounds, wiring or comps can cause the system not to detect the fault or faults.Especially on those old models the comp systems arent very update to date or designed well enough to be able to detect some faults or error codes. - helpful bob

3)   Sounds like a misfire.

You say you recently changed the plugs, did this start after you changed the plugs, or did you change the plugs due to this problem?

If this started after you changed the plugs, check the wires to be sure they're all on good and tight (check both ends), good idea to also check the plugs themselves to make sure they're all tight.

If the plugs and wires are all on tight, then check the wires themselves to make sure they're good. If the wires are old and/or cracked, replace them.

Remove the distributor cap and check the cap and rotor. If there's a lot of carbon build-up, the metal tabs inside are worn down, or if it has cracks in it, then replace the cap and rotor.

If all of that checks out good, then it's probably time to take it in and have it checked by your trusted mechanic. - Mark B

Getting a new car tomorrow. My husband wants a Chrysler 300, I want a Magnum. Which one is better?

Question 1
Getting a new car tomorrow. My husband wants a Chrysler 300, I want a Magnum. Which one is better?...

Answers
1)   chrysler 300. - MissingYou! <3

2)   THE one your buying - roc/WLA

3)   sorry, no on a chrysler anything, I learned my lesson years ago, I had a really nice dodge charger, a three dollar part, broke, killed the engine while driving uphill, on a steep bridge in the pouring rain at 60 mph. no wipers no warning, nothing, I had the person with me looking out the side passenger window, and telling me how close the guardrail was, because I did not want to fly off the bridge, learn how to fly for two hundred feet, then go swimming next. I had to stop the car as fast as possible, I could not see. two minutes later it quit raining, I was broke down on a bridge on a freeway, fifty feet from the top of the bridge and a downhill exit, that literally if you went straight at the bottom took you directly into a tow truck tow yard, next to a pay phone. (and none of the tow trucks were there, they were all on call, what luck ehh?) nissan, honda, toyota or subaru - roger

4)   a300 Drive one, got style, room and very good for me so far - lisa T

5)   They are pretty much the same car, its just the magnum has the station wagon back end. The 300 has a bit softer suspension and a few little fake accents to make it look fancier than a Dodge. If you really mean 'new' you are stuck with the 300 because they quit making the magnum in 09 in favor of the Challenger. Dont be afraid of the R/T models, especially if you like the better interior stuff. The Rt's include most of the interior options and the Hemi V8. I have an 05 magnum RT that got rear ended so it was in the shop for a few weeks. My loaner car was a 300 with the v6. I drove it in the same way to the same places with the same loads as I carry in my Magnum with the V8 and averaged 2 mpg less with the 300 and the V6. The V6 is alright on power but the Hemi is really fun. I have got as high as 30mpg on the highway. Typical highway (70mph) is around 25. Around town not driving like a old person or race driver I tend to hang around 20. If I really drive crazy around town i can get it down to about 14. My car is just the RWD version and have had no problems with snow and ice, even a few times was pushing snow with the bumper and got through just fine so IMHO its not worth the extra cost, lower mpg, and higher repair costs of having the AWD. These cars are so low to the ground I dont think the AWD helps that much anyway. You get snow up to the bumper / bottom of any car I dont think it matters how may wheel drive you have the only way out is to get more clearance with the ground... which is why we have trucks, jeeps, and other suv's. Other side note is the Magnum RT's can get a tow package to tow in the range of 3500 pounds. I believe the rest of the cars can only tow 2000. Lots of trailers weigh more than 2000 but 3500 covers many small boats and campers, even a medium size u haul trailer works. Pulling a 3000 pound enclosed trailer I do about 15 mpg on the highway which is as good or maybe better than you would get with most trucks or SUVs without a trailer. - doornobk

6)   You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carquotes.sinfree.net - Jimmy

7)   If you want some ammo to throw at him to convince him to sway your way, go online to the lemon aid site or consumers report on cars. - Donny

Strange town and country transmission issue?...  My 05 town and country was working great never had an issue with the transmission. I parked my car while my wife got it than put it back into drive after she got in. as i drove away the check engine light came on and i noticed it wasnt shifting when i reached a normal speed it would shift at. It appears to be stuck in 2nd gear for no reason. There was no warning signs any ideas.
Shift solenoid if that's it how much does it cost to repair?

Answers
1)   Shift solenoid - ?

2)   Don't go throwing parts at it. That is the sure way to waste time and money. You need to take it to a shop that can read transmission codes off the TCM. The Trans controller told the engine controller to set the lamp on. Now you need to find out what the TCM code is. Don't take it to autozone or other parts store. They don't read the TCM codes and will tell you that there is a controller fault. Take it to a shop or dealer that has a good reputation and get a good firm diagnosis before you dump money into a repair that won't fix anything. - Mike J

3)   its in fail safe which means computer recognizes a problem and puts the car in second gear could be a output or input speed sensor or the solenoid assembly or even wiring going to the solenoid assembly take to a transmission shop to have them check it find one at ATRA.COM - bo

4)   Try http://digbeaut.com/344053/warning-sign . - willford cromie

5)   Something in the transmission had a fault, and the computer put it into a limp mode to prevent further damage. Most common problem is the input and output speed sensors, or the solenoid pack, but it could be something else, too.

The only way to really know is to have the codes read on the computer. You could have the local parts store pull the codes, they can pull some of the transmission codes, but certainly not all of them. It's certainly worth a try since it's free, and if it doesn't work, then you can try a repair shop.

I would recommend the dealer, or a local trusted mechanic
I would also recommend against a transmission shop, but if you do take it to one, certainly get a second opinion if they say it's going to be something expensive (anything over a couple hundred dollars), of course, that goes for any shop, really.

If they say they can't figure it out without "going into it" or "Tearing it down" or something similar to indicate they have to do some dis-assembly, do NOT agree to it and take it somewhere else for a second opinion. This is a classic trick to get you to spend your money there, they'll tear it down for free, but when you don't do the work or say you want a second opinion, they'll charge you to put it back together hoping you'll say just go ahead and fix it at that point. I've seen cases where they did this, and never even took the transmission apart, just went for the rebuild or re-manufactured transmission sale. - Mark B

6)   J believe the transmission has a safety set up that when there is a problem or code in the computer the trans won't shift higher than two. This is to protect the trans from blowing up. - Donny

1)   No.
Go to NADA.com to find out what the car is worth. - seymore d

2)   That to me is about the average price and really it all depends on how well maintained the vehicle was kept , plus what kind of warranty the dealership is offering.I'd for sure shop around and maybe consider checking out private sellers , plus look at a few different makes etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way due to the way the economy is and due to the fact it's still a buyers market out there I'd really do some wheeling and dealing and shopping around first before ever agreeing on on that price or vehicle.

Happy Holidays to all. - helpful bob

3)   No way. Not for that van at that mileage.

Question 2

- Donny

Question 3
How make 94 Chrysler LHS run better?...  It has been stalling while driving it. I put in some Napa BG to clean out the fuel sys and I need to run that a while. But oil light just came on and I just changed the oil. What else can I do to make it run better? I just got the car and has not had maintenance for 50k+ miles. Should I change the spark plugs? What else? I just put in a new thermostat.

Answers
1)   Take it to a local garage and have the computer system scanned for stored codes. Have them check the car out to see what needs to be done. 50K and no maintenance, not good. things are going to start going bad. $$$$$$$$$ out the window unless you are a mechanic and the labor is free. - Bobo

2)   spark plugs. ignition coils if it has any. brakes. all filters. if its carburated you should clean that. - dpelt73

3)   Performance mods are not a very good idea on a vehicle that is nearly 17 years old. You would be just asking for problems.

However there are a few things you could and should do.

First, a good tune up. New plugs. Nothing fancy. Fancy plugs do little to improve a stock engine. Use the same make and type plug originally installed from the factory. Usually platinum plugs. Install a good set of spark plug wires at the same time. Again, nothing fancy but don't go cheap either. The parts store will usually offer a few sets of plug wires with various prices. Select a mid grade set and they will work fine.

TIP: When installing the plugs put a small amount of anti seize compound on the threads. A little goes a long way. Don't get any on the electrodes. This will make them easier to remove in the future. Put a small amount of dielectric grease in the spark plug wire boots. This will help seal out moisture and make them easier to remove in the future.

Change the air filter. Again, nothing fancy. The stock air filter will supply the engine with all the air it will need.

If the car is equipped with a mass airflow sensor clean it with Mass Airflow Sensor cleaner. Don't use anything like carburetor cleaner or you will destroy the sensor turning a $5 repair into a $50+ repair.

It may be a good idea to replace the oxygen sensor(s). These should be replaced from time to time.

Add a can of Sea Foam to the fuel system. This will clean out your fuel injectors. After the first tank of Sea Foam replace your fuel filter. Every couple of tanks of fuel add about 1 ounce of Sea Foam per gallon of fuel. This will keep your fuel system and intake clean.

Spray some Sea Foam Deep Creep into the throttle body while the engine is running until it stalls. Allow the engine to sit for several minutes and restart. This will clean the carbon from your plenum, intake manifold, and around your valves. The engine will be difficult to restart and will most likely smoke for a few minutes. This is normal.

About 50 miles before your next oil change add about 1 ounce of Sea Foam per quart of motor oil. Drive normally. This will help clean sludge deposits from inside your engine. If you oil pressure light starts to come on, immediately change your oil and filter. This would be because the Sea Foam washed enough sludge that it may block your oil filter. However this is an extreme condition and would be unlikely to happen.

With the age of this vehicle I would change the transmission fluid filter and transmission fluid.

Keep a close watch on your tire pressure. Too low tire pressure creates increased rolling resistance. Keeping the tires inflated to the correct pressure will improve performance and fuel economy.

If you can do all of the work yourself you could get buy with doing all of this work for less than $150. At least double this amount if you must pay a mechanic to do the work for you. - Mad Jack

4)   First off, change the oil and filter. This is very important. You need to change the plugs and set the gap after you clean the t-body at the air intake . Spray some kind of carbon cleaner in the throttle body and on the inside and on the ISM idle speed motor. I use a old tooth brush to scrub the inside of the t-body. Clean off the throttle plate(butterfly valve) run the engine after doing this to clear out the cleaner, this should make it idle better - Donny

5)   dont feel bad even the new ones have those problems - ?

6)   Go back in time and slap the bejesus out of the engineers who designed it. - patrick_hiestand

Where can I buy a new Brake Master cylinder for chrysler Voyager in uk?

Question 1
Where can I buy a new Brake Master cylinder for chrysler Voyager in uk?...  I have a 1998 chrysler voager. I bought the Car second hand 2 years ago and there has been a problem with the brakes Since I got it. I have taken it to different garages countless times and they keep saying that it is different things. I have had nearly every thing to do with the brakes changed and they have been bled countless times and the brakes work for a few days to a week. Then the break pedal goes soft when the engine is on. The break pedal is always hard when engine is off. I last took it to the garage a month ago they changed the claipers and brake pads and did a few other things. When I went to get in car when picked it up from garage the break pedal was still soft. I complained and they took car away and bought it back 10 minutes later and I asume they just bled breaks. It fixed breaks for a couple of days the break pedal went soft again. I think it is the master cylinder. and have asked them to replace but I keep being told its not. I have changed master cylinders on other cars so know what im doing and have some time on my hands in the new year so thought I would change the master cylinder my self. Does it sound like it the master cylinder to you and also where it the best place to buy a master cylinder for a 1998 chrysler voyager in the uk.

- doornobk

How clean heater core 94 lhs?...  I want to clean the heater core but the hoses to that are so buried under stuff I can't get to them. What else can I do? Make quick starts to loosen up the heater core junk? Other ideas to get the junk loose in there?

Answers
1)   It's seem you have too much junk in your trunk.
What you could do is unhook the heater hoses at the other end away from the heater. Flush out the coolant in there. Then add vinegar or CLR not both. Let it sit for a few hours and put the pressure hose to it. You will be amazed the junk that gets out of your trunk. - Donny

2)   watch your step with getting at that "junk"/you get too aggressive and you can end up with water on the floor//take t/stat out/reclose the t/stat housing and then put a can of rad cleaner in the system and water/cover the front of rad with a blanket to get operating temp to normal/run engine at 2000 rpm for a minute at normal temp/drain rad and find the block drain and take that out/remove the t/stat housing (secure drains) and fill the block at the t/stat housing until its full 50/50/ mix/secure new t/stat and fill radiator to top/start engine and run until rad is warm/fill to top and install new cap and drive it around the block/wait awhile and then check rad level and overflow reservoir/top off and do it again around the block/watch temp ga and check for leaks - ken k

3)   there,s another way and that is take the heater hoses off the block and water pump, take a garden hose and flush up into 1 hose and then the other hose. that way you don,t have to remove the hoses off the core. - bandit_60

4)   You have no choice, just take your time.. Or cut the hose then use a reducer, with a metal coupling to connect them after you blow the heater core out with air.. - ?
