Chrystler 300m will not turn over?

Question 1
Chrystler 300m will not turn over?...  I drove the car yesterday and this morning it wouldn't start. Though the starter clicks and all the lights turn on. It's driving me crazy. Any ideas?

Answers
1)   The batteries may still be too low - milkiboi

2)   All this freezing weather has killed your battery, If it is over 3 or 4 years old, its probably time to replace it. Cold weather is hard on them, especialy after afew years.

I just had to replace My Moms battery for the same reasons.. and the car works fine now.

It is possible that some crud has built up on the teminals, keeping it from charging well. Have the battery tested somewhere, It should be at least 13.5 volts.

If it is very old, you should just get a new one, so it wont keep doing this to you. Have some one do it for you that you trust, so everything will get done correctly. Once a battery stars to fail. its just never gets better. better to spend the 60-80 bucks then be sitting in a dark parkinglot some cold night because your car wont start. either that or get AAA - just visiting

3)   change the battery if the lights on the dash blink while turning the key and u hear a ticking noise - Azizam

4)   Well check if you have enough fuel or if the fuel meter isn't working. It can be that or maybe it really is your battery.

But I believe that you should try putting some more gasoline just to check. - Entertainment World

5)   I had a very similar problem on my 200 Chrysler 300M. I think it is the belt tensioner on the timing belt. It could also be that your timing is out of wack. The belt tensioner on my car got loose and it wasnt the easiest thing to fix. It wasnt that it was hard to fix it was just very hard to get to. - BMono

6)   Since you state the starter clicks, I'm taking this to mean you hear either a bunch of clicking when you try to start it, or one click and nothing else, and it does not try to spin the motor over at all. In that case, I would say it's most likely a weak battery.

First, check the cables and connections to make sure they're clean and tight. Loose cables will make it seem like a dead battery, and corroded cables can drain the battery or keep it from charging properly. If there's a lot of corrosion, you can clean it with a water with a little baking soda mixed in, might have to scrub it a bit. They sell cleaner at parts stores, but baking soda is less expensive and is already in many houses, which saves a trip to the store. Might even loosen the cables and clean the posts and the inside of the cable clamp if it's got a lot of build up. If you have a battery post and terminal cleaner, use it, but you can also use a piece of fine grit sandpaper, scotch brite pad, or emory cloth to clean them.

I'd suggest trying to charge the battery first, since the alternator could be bad, which would lead to a drained battery. If the battery won't take a charge, then replace the battery.

If you the battery charges up, drive it to the local parts store, most of them will do a basic charging system check at no charge. That will generally tell you if it's the battery or alternator that needs replacing, and they'll happily offer to sell you the replacement for whichever it needs. (some will even change out the battery for you at no extra charge)

If you charge the battery and get only one click, that could be a loose cable at the starter, a locked up starter, or worse, a locked engine. Check the cables at the starter first, if they feel tight, then you'll have to have it towed to a shop to find out what the problem is. - Mark B

7)   If it's a 2.7L, the motor is probably locked up and junk. - p3200tmz

8)   The battery should be measuring atleast 12.75v which is just at 75% capacity. I'm guessing it could be due to either a bad crank or camshaft position sensor. Maybe. - enjoi_2k4

9)   Check the battery connections and the battery itself. If they are good, then it's probably the contacts worn down in the starter solenoid which is very, very common with Chrysler starters. I have repaired dozens and dozens of solenoids in Chrysler (Denso) starters while working for them. They start acting up around 80 to 100 thousand miles. - Jackolantern

1)   I have driven Goodyear tires for years, and always had good luck with them. I bought a Dodge mini van in 97 and put 100K miles on it. It came with Michelin r235/65-16 tires on it. I liked them a lot, and when I did have to replace them, after 65K miles, I bought the same things again. They rode nice, and the tread wear was great, considering that front wheel drive car and vans can be hard on tires. Price wise both are comparable. I would buy the Michelins though, if I had to choose. - michael k

2)   I believe the factory tires were were Goodyear tires (the mid-level invictus?). The better and tires are the Goodyear Assurance. They cost a bit more but will give the smooth ride you want and last 40-50,000 miles. The best, in my opinion, for this car are the Michelins, but expect to pay top dollar. - C-Tech

3)   I recently put the spare on the ground so I only had to buy 3 new tires on my intrepid. It's eagle ga, and are okay but a little noisy. Change your eng oil too, you have to change the oil alot with a 2.7. - done wrenching

4)   Either! - Jackolantern

5)   The Goodyear Wranglers they put on the Jeeps are cheap pieces of crap. Michelins are over rated and over priced imho. I run Fuzion HRi on my Pontiac, nice tire at a good price. - doane_nut

6)   If you are looking for a softer tire, then you are probably looking for a michelin. Michelin tires are manufactured using a softer rubber than most, including goodyear. I'm not saying that goodyear tires are bad, but the michelins are usually better. they will handle a little better, and if you drive in snow or ice, they will have a better grip on ice since they are softer. - josh g

7)   Factory tires were Goodyear. The Imperial I drive now had Michelin replacements on it. After driving on them for 10 years, with a wonderfully quiet and smooth ride, I replaced them earlier this year with another set. I replaced them because of the age factor. - badbill1941

Question 3
I have a 1986 chrysler 5th ave. v8. The tranny doesn't want to shift into 2 gear until it is warmed up. Help?...

Answers
1)   replace fluid? truth is dodge always had bad transmissions but most likey dirty oil and filter

a transmission shop or a ny shop can replace fluids easy might help - kelly_f_1999

2)   The fluid level may be low. When it warms up the fluid expands and its ok. I suggest checking the fluid level and if low, add fluid and check for a leak. If fluid level is ok, then the filter may be clogging up. Change the filter and fluid. Good luck. - C-Tech

3)   An '86 5th Ave?!??! Geez that's pretty cool. You Win! - Yamamoto

4)   Sounds like a dirty trans filter. Try changing it, and putting in new fluid. - badbill1941

5)   Change the oil and flush the converter and cooling lines, if that dosent work remove the trans pan, if more than half a tablespoon of material in it time to rebuild, and also drop the vavle body and check the vavles and springs for binding and or wear. Also make sure the valve body isnt warped - rick b

6)   I would say it's most likely a valve sticking in the valve body, I've seen it happen before.

The thing you'll want to consider is this, would you rather repair the transmission on this car, or go ahead and get a replacement remanufactured unit? Since the car is almost 24 years old, you may just want to spend the money to get a remanufactured unit installed. Or, you may want to get rid of it all together and buy a different car instead of fixing this one. But, I like the 5th avenues and would probably get a remanufactured unit installed if it was my car, unless it had a lot of other problems that would keep me from wanting to fix it up.

The Chrysler reman will probably run about $1500 to $2000, but you should be able to get one for your car for around $1000 or less (prices are plus labor, of course).

Did a quick search and found this site that has one for $660 with a 1 year unlimited miles warranty (they give the option to buy longer warranties): http://info.automotix.net/transmissions/search.html?make=chrysler&model=5th_avenue&year=1986 However, I cannot vouch for them, as I've had no experience with them or their products. Plus, you'll have to add shipping, which will probably be around $200 unless you live near the KC area and can pick it up yourself. You could also call around and search for others closer to you that might have similar prices.

A valve body will probably cost around a couple hundred or more, plus labor. - Mark B

Question 4
question about my 2000 chrysler concorde?...  I have been having problems with oil pressure light coming on .I went to check my oil and itsmelled like gas, Is my car falling apart.....

Answers
1)   Do not run the car anymore until change new oil and filter and then find problem of fuel in oil,be it an excessive misfired, leaking fuel injector or bad fuel pressure regulator. - Carman Nguyen

2)   "Is my car falling apart....."
Maybe.
You should get the oil and filter changed.
You should then get the oil pressure wet tested - it's a relatively simple test that will determine if the engine has a oil pressure problem or, hopefully, just an electrical oil sender concern.
If the vehicle does only short trips in the winter with minimal warm up times, the oil may well "smell like gas." - LeAnne

3)   If your engine is the 2.7L, it's dieing a typical horrible death. Google it! Chrysler 2.7 problems! - p3200tmz

4)   These cars had problems with the oil light coming on when it shouldn't. In fact there is a bulletin on it at the dealer! Did the dipstick read over full when you sniffed it? If so, change the oil and filter and keep a sharp eye on it. Does the engine miss when you first start it up? This could be caused by an injector leaking down over night. Other than that, I don't know how gas got into the oil. - Jackolantern

Question 5
chrysler voyager 02 2.4L Shuts down when driving or stopping at red light?...  This Voyager has been hell!!!LOL Anyway question is when driving to work van begins to jerk then eventually shuts down as soon as i get it started and when on the hwy it hits a hill and struggles and proceeds to jerk upon stalling. I checked under hood to see if its over heating but the coolant cap is ice cold that shouldnt be! so i chage the thermastat for the water pump but still the same problem does anyone no what it could be?

Answers
1)   I had that issue with my vehicle too..it could be the fuel pump or the timing...good luck :) - Pilatesgirl

2)   my first instinct tells me it's the crank angle sensor. It could be many things though. - Ryan S

3)   running bad and or is it overheating

begins to jerk dirty fuel or a bad spark plug nothing to do with coolant

more likey dirty fuel happens more in winter drive it low on fuel alot tank sweats make water in tank runs bad jerks and dies - kelly_f_1999

4)   It is likely that the issue is with the overdrive. The transmission is not shifting our of overdrive. The times that this would need to happen, is when driving over 40 MPH and coming to a stop or loading the vehicle enough to require a down shift. This is common in the voyager.

Put the shifter into the drive position, not the overdrive position, and see if the issue disappears.

Unfortunately, these are usually internal issues, however, if you are willing to sacrifice gas mileage, you can drive the vehicle in drive - which will prohibit the overdrive from engaging.

Forget all of the fuel/spark/fuel pump ... those issues would occur all of the time, not just in select situation. I would also guess again with the crank sensor .. the van would not start at all if the sensor reported trouble.

Mechanics are too fast to plug in the computer and change parts ... a real test drive would have eliminated plenty of guessing. - telewheelsmike
