How much should it cost to replace the automatic transmission in a Chrysler Crossfire?

Question 1
How much should it cost to replace the automatic transmission in a Chrysler Crossfire?...

Answers
1)   A good estimate might be 2000-2500. Automatic transmissions arent cheap...alot of the time it costs every bit as much as replacing the engine. Assuming the trans can't be rebuilt or serviced you can expect to hear around 2500 brand new from manufacturer. - Kevin

2)   It might cost you $2000, maybe $3000. These tranny's are not all made in the USA. Especially if you have the autostick. I just installed one for my sister's Sebring coupe for $3,345. - John J

3)   Why on earth do you need a transmission for a Crossfire already? Anyways, that motor is from Mercedes-Benz. Im pretty sure the transmission is too. (I hope that helps some) - redskyblackdream

4)   Approximately 1 butt-load of cash. - Dave

5)   How many miles do you have on this vehicle? Most Crossfires came with a 7yr or 70,000 miles warranty on the powertrain. Other than that if you are indeed out of warranty then most of these guys are right about the cost of replacing the transmission especially Dave at the estimate of 1 Butt Load. - redondo69

Question 2
I lost the keys to a 1992 voyager, whayt should i do?...  I lost the keys to my grandmas 1992 voyager, so should I get an ignition switch, or should we get a steering column? Which one is cheapest and easiest? Or if here is a better way what is it?

Answers
1)   go to the auto parts store and get a new ignition switch. - randy_ishere

2)   Go to the dealership with the VIN # and they can cut you a new key that will fit.

Best of Luck! - Dave

3)   EACH VEHICLE has its own KEY CODE that the dealer can research and then "cut" a new set of keys to use on the original ignition and locks. Don't buy anything else. EVERY CAR AND TRUCK HAS A CODE FROM WHEN IT WAS FIRST BUILT. GO TO A DEALER - fire_inur_eyes

4)   I would call a licensed locksmith. It should take them only a couple of minutes to do, and it would probably be the cheapest and it would be the best way to avoid any damage to the vehicle. Calling a Dodge dealership is a good idea, but they only hold on to the cars "key codes" for a couple years, if I remember the max is 10 years. - ippipal

5)   As far as the options you posted, I'd go with just a cylinder rather than replacing the whole column. Much easier and less expensive (unless there's other problems with the column, of course).

However, I'd try the local dealership first to see if they can cut a new key for you. You should be required to show proof of ownership and a picture ID. (proof of ownership is generally a title, registration receipt, or current insurance card) That means if it's in your grandma's name, she may have to go to the dealership to get the key cut for it, depending on how strict they are about cutting keys, same last name may be enough for some, some may require talking to the person who owns the car before cutting it, and some may not cut it for anyone else but the registered owner. A call to the dealer parts department will confirm whether they can get the code for your car or not (last I heard the parts guy say is they could go back to 1990, but that's been a few years back).

Some dealers may charge to obtain the code, but many won't and will simply charge for the key. Either way, it's likely to be less than calling a locksmith and having them come out and cut a key for it. Locksmith will charge a service call, plus the labor to cut a key, plus the key price. If the dealer can't get the code, then it's either a locksmith, or get a new cylinder.

BTW, if you replace the cylinder, ask for an "ignition cylinder" at the parts store. If you ask for a "switch", you'll get an electrical switch, not the key cylinder. Many parts stores won't take back electrical items, no matter what the reason for returning it. - Mark B

Question 5
how long does a 1989 chrysler town & car transmission last?...  how long does the transmission last

Answers
1)   Depends how well its been taken care of and how old it is. Its 21 years old now so I don't care who made it I wouldn't be surprised if it needed work. - emiller1998

2)   They had lots of problems even when they were new. I had mine rebuilt, he said it could go less than 30K or last a lifetime, but he wouldn't guarantee nothing! - Bob S

3)   Transmissions like most wear items depend on it's user or the USERS. I have seen brand new cars need new engines or transmissions at 20-30,000 miles. Always keep the fluid levels up, always check the fluid each month. Flush most transmissions about every 3 years under normal wear(12-16,000 miles per year is normal). Us the right kind of fluid when changing!! But, to answer your question directly, they should last the life of the car. I have 12 vehicles and only two have needed a new tranny or rebuilt. Both times they were in my work trucks that haul a lot of gear and are under strain at times. One has 211,000 miles, the other had 119,800 miles on it. I have three cars with at least 100-130,000 miles each and no problems. - John J

The light is basically telling you to shut off the engine because you have no oil pressure at all. It's a stupid light that only comes on after you may have already done damage to your engine.

Why is Chrysler sitting at the free money trough with Ford and GM?

Question 1
Why is Chrysler sitting at the free money trough with Ford and GM?...  Ford and GM are publicly traded companies and their stock is subject to impact average Americans and their retirement plans. I don't agree with a bail out, but I see why they are at the table begging. I can't believe no Senator or Representative in either of these trips to Washington asked Chrysler why they were there also. They are a private firm held by a private company that has plenty of money. If they need money shouldn't they just ask the parent company for it? Are we really going to give a few billion dollars to a hand full of guys that already have a few billion dollars in the bank?

Answers
1)   Ok first of all FORD has taken no money at all! GM and Chrysler are the one's that got the bailout. Ok the reason they need the money....GM alone have well over 250,000 retired employee's, they get full health benfites and average 4k a month. Do the math for 250,000 people and it add up to ALOT of money. SO do you want GM to say the hell with the retired employee's and not pay them anymore? They are in alot of debt. They dont have billions like you think they do - BlueDog

2)   Ford did not take any bailout or taxpayer money. - Kenny

3)   Interesting that you have this chat well after the hearings etc. Ford did not take any government loans. GM and Chrysler were bailed out because the size and scope of their total collaspe would have thrown the country and world into a deeper financial bind. Considering the auto suppliers which would have been dragged down by their failures, all auto production would have ceased for awhile in the U.S. - C-Tech

4)   I'm sorry. Did you have a question? - Dave

5)   Yeah, the big 3 have the govt buffaloed.

All 3 are cash strapped. Chrysler is a fairly new company that is privately held and does not have the backing of a huge number of stockholders. Daimler still holds 20% of Chrysler, but Daimler is not interested in putting any more money into the company. Chrysler's intent is to eventually buy out Daimler.

But Ford and GM need Chrysler to keep out of monopolistic charges. For example, if there were only 2, and one of them did not offer a specific product, the other company could claim monopolistic practices and the lawyers would get rich at our expense. Back in the '60s, GM financed Chrysler's greater warranty program in order to keep Chrysler afloat.

If the car makers were smart, they would crank out a high quality model and private lable it to the other car makers. Like Toyota Matrix does for the Pontiac Vibe. Why should each company produce very similar models? All cars are going to look virtually alike because fuel economy dictates a shape that moves through air efficiently. - Kelsie

6)   Chrysler is not a private firm, lona. They have stock holders just like the other companies. And they don't have a parent company either. Chrysler wouldn't be there if they hadn't got caught up in the recession like everyone else. But if you remember the company went through this before Lee Iaccoca took over in the late 70s'. After that time Lee asked the government for 4 billion to keep the company from going bankrupt. Chrysler repaid the loan with about a year and a half to spare. One reason the big three got in the mess wasn't really their fault either. People wanted big stuff to drive. SUVs' big 4 door trucks,etc... And all these got terrible gas mileage. The Big Three had to build them to compete or loose business. Then gas went to $4.50 a gallon and stopped the sales of the big stuff. The recession was the last straw to a troubled auto market. Ford hasn't asked for a bail out....yet. Remember lona, every coin has two sides. And so does every story. - Jackolantern

7)   The way they ended up with money was to sit around in nice suits and convince other people to let them use their money. It’s called using other People’s Money, or OPM. In that business you never leave any cash on the table. Other People’s Cash. If legislators are dumb enough to stack the thousand dollar bills to the ceiling, no Wall Street type is going to leave a dollar on the table.

And they don’t have that much money either. You see money is *all* they have. Once that is gone the show is over. No more yachts and cigars. And if you publicly blow all your money on a bad investment, the OP are somewhat reluctant to let you manage any more of their M. - cerbberi

8)   management of these companies without restrictions who screwed up and, in the case of Bank of America, won't give a loan to that company where the employees are picketing. And all of those bonuses and golden parachutes that are being paid to those executives with our money. Who is protesting against that? Not enough people that I can see. But I do believe this feeling against the Big 3 is a backlash.

The loan (not bailout) is being given to the Big 3 so that our last manufacturing base in this country (thanks to the Bush administration) does not go under. Manufacturing cars has always been a tremendous industry in our country, and in WWII the assembly lines converted to war production and helped us win the war. This is a gift to main street, the hourly guy who breaks his back everyday for maybe $28 per hour (not the $72 talked about). If we allow them to go belly up, there are about 3 millions jobs across the U.S. that will go under because they are small businesses that get their income from the auto industry. You are talking of crippling Michigan, Indiana and Ohio. This will tip us over into a real Depression. This is a lot like locking the barn after the horse has run away. You think things are bad now, just let the Big 3 go under.

I admit that the public is disgusted with the previous bailouts, but the emphasis on punsihing the Big 3 for the others, is unfair. The automobile companies are guilty in the past of riding the gravy train, but so was everyone else, the American public for instance. How much have you charged to credit cards? Can you pay your mortgage? Let's get real.

I come from Michigan and know how much the Big 3 supports the Mid-west. My family is still there and things are so bad now with layoffs that there are a rash of home robberies going on now. People are afraid that if the Big 3 goes down, the state will become a welfare state and crime will become rampant.

But, as I said, this loan affects main street, not corporate executives, and we have enough people floudering because of the home failures, let alone adding a 3 million job loss to the burden that Obama will take over in January.

To put things in perspective, Bush just bought a $2 million house in Dallas where he will reside after his presidency. He gets us in two wars, bankrupts the surplus, in debt to China, and leaves us with a near disaster of an economy. Why isn't anyone angry about that?

It's smart business to save the Big 3, and it's a loan people not a bailout. - Aryana

9)   From the Wall Street Journal:

Lawmakers last week questioned Chrysler Chief Executive Robert Nardelli on Cerberus's commitment to the company. In one exchange with Mr. Nardelli, Sen. Robert Corker (R., Tenn.) criticized the firm. "Cerberus has cash, lots of cash, that it is unwilling to put into this company," Sen. Corker said.

I'm not sure if Senator Corker was the only one to actually ask the question (I was at work, and am relying on media reports), but plenty of others are objecting to Chrysler getting money. In fact, it's bipartisan opposition:

If the Senate fails to pass a measure to aid the industry, the House will not act.

That would be fine with Rep. Steve Kagen, D-Appleton. He opposes providing money to Chrysler, which is owned by Cerberus Capital Management LP.

Admittedly, Rep. Kagen's opposition sounds personal: Another of Cerberus' companies closed paper mills in his district, but refuses to sell the facilities to investors who want to have a go at running them. But he's urged other Members of Congress not to give Chrysler any money at all.

It looks like there are Congresscritters who support giving GM and Ford help that object to giving Chrysler help. Whether they're enough to change the outcome remains to be seen. - delouse

Answers
1)   Dodge/Chrysler reliability cant say the two word and say Dodge/Chrysler neither are reliable

can look that up there about 33 or more better
they stop making cars that was better than any Dodge/Chrysler
you can get a 20 yrs old ford or chevy thats better than any new Dodge/Chrysler

cant say this any better want a car that last without many problems dont look at any Dodge or Chrysler - kelly_f_1999

2)   They are the exact same car with a different body and interior. Both of those cars are pretty reliable too. - emiller1998

3)   Some people just repeat what other have claimed with no personal knowledge. The 2 cars you ask about are fairly reliable. Very few are towed in for engine, trans, or electrical failures regardless of the engine and trans combinations that are in them (an improvement over the Concorde and Intrepid). The only common failures I've seen are egr valves at about 70,000-100,000 miles, carbon build-up on the valves in the 3.5L V6 when then are heavily driven in stop-n-go traffic, and the self inflicted problems by the so-called customizers who don't know how what they are doing. For the money it is probably the best full-sized car you can buy. I have seen them used by salespeople (especially the Dodge Magnum) and go well past 100,000 miles in less than 3 years. - C-Tech

4)   The chrysler 300 and charger are very reliable vehicles. What you need to know is they share mercedes benz parts. - Jacob

- delouse

Question 2
Dodge/Chrysler reliability?...  Is a chrysler 300 awd and dodge charger awd reliable. About how long will they last and is one more relaible then the other?

- Jacob

Question 3
what is the easiest way to tell if the timing belt broke on a 2004 sebring?...

Answers
1)   The cam shaft will stop turning causing a piston to strike an open valve, and your engine will IMMEDIATELY stop running. Expect MAJOR repairs. - Peedlepup

2)   if you look in the engine bay the belt will be broken. - mitsukid124

3)   Take off the oil cap and you should be able to see a few of the rockers. Have someone crank the engine and if the belt is intact you will see the rockers move. If they don't move you have a broken belt. And probably some bent valves.
Best of Luck! - Dave

Question 4
where is the big red button to reset the fuel pump on a 1990 plymouth sundance?...

Answers
1)   That car does not have a fuel cutoff switch. Check the fuse and relay. You may just have a failed pump. Very common. - Dave

2)   You can tear the car apart and you'll never find a fuel reset button. You drive a Plymouth, not a Ford (and Ford only used it for a short time, and then started using a relay). If you have a buddy, or someone else who you know that is telling you there's a reset button, they don't know what they're talking about and are leading you in the wrong direction.

Your car has an ASD relay that controls spark and fuel, and shuts it down when it detects a certain rate of deceleration. It may be bad, or the pump relay, or the pump itself is bad. You need to see if the pump is getting power at the connector, if it's getting power, the pump is bad, if it isn't getting power, it's either a relay, bad ignition switch, or a broken wire somewhere. - Mark B

3)   No reset button, you got a fuse, relay, pump, oil pressure switch and engine controler that has anything to do with the fuel pump running. Big red button? only at office depot "that was easy" - rick b

Question 5
how much does a727 transmission for 68 Plymouth weight?...

Answers
1)   For some reason 125 pounds comes to mind, but I have nothing to back up that figure. That figure is less torque convertor and fluid. - Don't know everything !

2)   As I remember it, about 75 pounds less the converter. - badbill1941

3)   I would say it is upwards of 100 pounds, what is your reason for asking? Are you planning on pulling it out for rebuild or looking to loose weight on the car. The 727s do weigh more than the 904s but are much more bullit proof. Many guy's build the 904 for racing because of the ALUMINIUM, takes some time of the passes.

Do all 2002 Chrysler Voyagers have the same fuel capacities?

Question 1
Do all 2002 Chrysler Voyagers have the same fuel capacities?...

Answers
1)   Yes they would bein' they are the same year and car haha butttttt also no because it's all on how you take care of your vehicle. If a friend has the same one as you but he gives it regular tune ups and takes better care of it then you then his would get better fuel than you. Unless your not talking about that. They should all have the same fuel tanks - ooooapryloooo

2)   All the 6 cyl, long wheelbase versions have a 20 gal. tank. The 4 cyl. short wheelbase versions(mostly used in fleets) have a 15 gal tank. - C-Tech

3)   Chrysler minivans such as the Voyager, Caravan, and Town and country come in two sizes. Standard and grand. The grand is longer and has a larger tank. The short (standard) can carry 6 foot long cargo and the grand can haul 8 foot. I have owned both. The grand size holds app. 20 gallons while the short ones hold app. 15. - Jackolantern

4)   No, There is an optional larger tank. Check with your local dealer, they can tell you what was ordered when it was new. Take them the serial number. - DONNY G

5)   2002 had only one tank available from the factory.

Some years had different sized tanks, but at least since 1996, each year all models used the same size gas tanks up until about 2005, this is when they offered the optional fold flat seats, so they had a different tank for that option. - Mark B

Question 4
2000 Chrysler Voyager would you recommend it?...  So i am car shopping, dont particularly want a van, but i can get this 2000 Chrysler voyager , with 130,000 miles, what would you say.. i went to Autobeef.com and then i went to edmunds.com and both or equal, some say yes some say no, thought i get your 2 cents here

Answers
1)   Its a roll of the dice. Many voyager had serious engine and transmission problems. If its cheap and rides and drives good then take a gamble. They have a poor resale value so don't spend to much for it. $1500 is about all its worth if its a good one. - austin j

2)   American Car. Its going to fail. I suggest you look at German cars VW or Mercedes they might be priced more but they are safer and will last longer and drive better. - Golf4ever

3)   im the owner of a 2000 voyager, and im really happy with it,im trying to repair a couple little problems but its a very good van!! - milwatts

4)   130,000 that's a lot of miles I hope its cheap if it was owned by a soccer mom you should steer clear of this. Go with a lower mileage car or get an extended warranty. You need to consider worse case scenario. Can you afford to replace an engine or transmission if a major component fails?
Unless you personally know the previous owner and their driving habits I would avoid a car or van with this many miles. - Willy P

Question 5
1998 town and country wont start?...  van was low on gas i was parked on a hill tried starting it, it fired then died. did this 3 times now wont even turn over. battery is good with jumpers. what could be the problem?
i guess its something in the dash were all the gauges go dead and if you pound on the dash it will work...googled it.thanx for your help
thanx for the help everyone....i hit the dash and it started right up

Answers
1)   Did you try getting it on level ground? If your low on gas and parked on a hill ur little bit of gas isn't going to make it in there. - ooooapryloooo

2)   first try filling the car with gas and try to jumpstart it and if that works go to level ground turn off the car and wait a while before you try to start it. Then if it doesnt start the alternator may be mad its not keeping ur battery charged. Or it can be your starter not working because thats what starts your car. - moises

3)   Sometimes when you try starting a vehicle you end up over drawing the battery cells or what I call stirring up the cells , also if the battery is an older battery it may have several dead cells and bec the vehicle is on aslant the bad cells are really stopping the battery's full cell functions therefore the battery might act like it's dead.

Next problem is if you ran out of gas then you're on a hill the fuel pump has to work harder , plus you've probably not added very much gas and that can cause starting issues.

I'd try letting the vehicle sit a bit if possible and also adding more fuel, plus I'd let the starter cool off bec if you've tried to start it several times you've not just drained the battery you've also over worked the starter.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way the fuel at the bottom of the tank has a lot of moister or dirt etc in it so you need to change the fuel filter on it asap, also check the starter relay I believe it's in the fuse box under the hood on that vehicle.

Note that there is more then likely a few relays in that vehicle that have the exact same part number so try one of the non vital relays in the starter relays place, but again I'd wait and be sure there's lot's of fuel and a solid good battery connection , no rust or corrosion etc and if possible have the vehicle on level ground. - helpful bob

Viberating steering wheel.?

Question 1
Viberating steering wheel.?...  Steering wheel vibrates/shakes when I apply a break and only when breaking. its an 04 Sebring sadan and the rotors have just been replaced.

Answers
1)   Perhaps a warped brake disc. If so it will need replacing. - Gavin

2)   Maybe because when you brake it makes the car lean foward and makes it viberate? - Phillip T

3)   take the car to get the alignment done. - Smutty

4)   Were the pads replaced? If not then you need new pads? Are you sure the rotors were replace and not resurfaced? That's a sign that you need new brakes. They could have made a mistake I would take it back to where you got it done. If a dealer did it and they tell you its because they're getting "Hot" thats a lie. Cause my dealer told me that but I know more about cars than they think. Sometimes they won't replace the brakes for whatever reason. - Sarah

5)   could be that they didn't properly align your rotor to your brake calipers. I'd go to another automotive shop and see if they put new rotors or re lathed rotors on. the re lathed can sometimes come out uneven and cause brake pulse. hope this helps. :-) - degenerate deviant

6)   it sounds like a possible strut issue, your struts would vibrate if they are loose or starting to break - sailboatsandbutterflies

7)   I can put my head on a block for this but there are only three possible things that could be wrong. Thanks for eliminating the rotors for me. They are in order of rank.
1. defective tire. one has lost pressure relative to the other or has been damaged from a pothole or something. Steel belted tires deform like this.
2. Your rim has a defect. It is not perfectly round due to even slight damage. Rotational forces would increase and be unstable
3. bad front caliper.

let discount tire check out your front tires by balancing them. - Geoid

8)   Somebody messed up the brake job. - done wrenching

9)   You still have a warped rotor. Did you check the rear? While driving, carefully apply the emergency brake and see if you still have a shaking. If so, it is the rear rotors. If not, it is the front. It's probably the front tho by causing the steering wheel to shake. Some shops have a turning lath that turns the rotors on the car. That is what we used in our dealership. Most big Chrysler dealerships use them. This is your best bet to get them right. - Jackolantern

Some years had different sized tanks, but at least since 1996, they all had the same size gas tanks, up until about 2005, this is when they offered the optional fold flat seats, so they had a different tank for that option. - Mark B

- Willy P

2)   There is also the auto shutdown relay that could be screwed up. But it is not like the ford inertia switch. - done wrenching

3)   I'd try disconnecting the battery for a few mins then see what it does once you reconnect it , but it should reset the whole comp system and therefore back to factory default settings. Also check the area that you hit on the vehicle a wiring harness could be pinched or stretched or a wire could be broken etc.Look for places were the harness bends etc and were harness's meet up by the fender walls etc.

Hope that helps and best of luck.

- Jackolantern

its not a great price but it is fair, its about wholesale price and miles are just over average for the year model,do a carfax or an autocheck on it and check its history, better yet if it from a dealer ask them you want to see both make them provide it for you so that it doesn't cost you,i gladly do it for any of my customers, might even be worth going to spend a few bucks and getting a factory dealer to look over the car and make sure its on the up and up

i am an auto dealer and sell more stratus' and sebrings then any other car made, all my cars i go over and check out unlike other that just advertise they do,if you do good maintenance on it it will serve you for a long time and don't forget to service trans when it comes time and the car will last

the 2.7L v6 people down because most people don't change oil any more like they should and when they do they rarely put the correct weight in it that the car calls for so therefore it will cause premature motor failure on the 2.7L

any chance you are close to western NC? got the same car i will sell for less....lol - wondering

4)   Yes. I owned a 03 Sebring that was by far the best car I'd ever owned. It had the 2.7L V6 engine but the 2.4L is just as good. I never had any major mechanical issues and the only minor one was the CD changer crapping out on me. Only reason I don't still have it is because of an accident. I would however try to get it for a bit less than $6,000 simply because the Sebring is an easy car to find and does tend to have a low resale value. - monkees19

Question 4
my 1999 chrysler cirrus lxi won't start. what could be wrong?...  i changed the battery and it still won't start. it will crank but won't fully turn over

Answers
1)   You Need to give more detail it could be a lot of things - MissJoker

2)   Have a friend put a code reader on it. This will save you much guessing. I would be willing to bet a friend owns one, as they have become very reasonable in price.
It could be anything from a crank position sensor, to an ignition wire missing (or not making contact), to a coil pack. Maybe even the ASD relay (but not likely). If a code reader says something like "misfire on cyl 2", then your coil pack is defective. This happened to me with our Chrysler van- lots of cranking, but no "fire". - GTCturboII

3)   My Cirrus did the same thing. It turned out to be the Mass airflow sensor (MAF) on mine. You can usually pinpoint if that is it by causing the car to throw a code. Here's what you do, Turn the ignition ON-OFF-ON-OFF-ON in less than five seconds and leave it in the on position. Watch the check engine light. It will begin to flash. Count the number of times the check engine light flashes. So for example, if it will flashes once, pauses and then flashes 2 more times, then it has just given you trouble code number of 12. There will be an even longer pause between codes so you can tell the difference between each code. Get it? It sounds difficult, but just try it a few times, you'll get the hang of it. Anyway, whatever is causing the problem will come up in this code. Let me know what code numbers you get and I'll tell you what they mean, or you can look it up in a Chiltons or Haynes manual. I'm betting it will be the mass air flow sensor. - Tonia C

Thinking of buying a 2003 PT Cruiser.?

Question 1
Thinking of buying a 2003 PT Cruiser.?...  Can anyone tell me about gas mileage? I've read that the car is too heavy for a 4 cylinder auto so it gets lousy mileage. Is this true? Is a 2003 too old for an inexpensive car like this, so it won't last much longer? Would anyone recommend buying a 2003 PT Cruiser with 102,000 miles on it? Anyone have a 2003 PTC that can answer my questions? Problems with them? Thank you in advance.

Answers
1)   That car is junk. Do not buy it. - Kenny

2)   no no no - sky6256gshdeudwdjdjgdjshdjhsjdhs

3)   DON'T! It's based on the Neon! Under powered, cheap materials, JUNK! Front ends constantly fall off them! Stick with a GM or Ford - Bob S

4)   I hate to say it, because in most cases Chrysler products are superior to other US comparable products by far, in my opinion.
But the PT is defiantly an exception.
What a pile of crap!
Please don't buy one, everything about them mechanically just svcks!!!!!! - Dave

5)   The truth about PT Cruisers: The front suspension bushings may be worn out. This will be evident in a test drive if you here a knocking noise from the front end. At 102,000 mile the timing belt will need replacement. If this has not been done, factor this into the price since it cost about 800 to replace with the water pump and assorted seals and tensioner. Expect mileage in the 20-23 city range and about 25-28 highway. Compared to other small cars this is low, but the PT Cruiser is larger and more comfortable and thus heavier than your average Civic or Corolla. Make sure all the electric items work as you would on any used car. The rear seats fold and remove so make sure the mechansism still works. If it is taken care of you will get plenty of use out of a PT or any used car. If it is neglected or abused, walk away. This goes for any used car. Good luck. - C-Tech

3)   i have worked for a used car lot for more than a decade.....over the past few years we have purchased numerous stratus' and sebrings, they are both equipped with the same under carriage(such as motor,trans,....etc) they have given our customers very good service, there is a downside to both the 4 cyl motor and the 6 cyl motor, with the 4 cyl they last a long time well past 100k miles, though if not properly maintained with oil changes the motors tend to give a little motor noise around or shortly after 100k miles, they keep going but to some this is a turn off,now the 6 cyl motor is a little more serious,if proper oil changes with recommended oil hasn't been performed then it has a bad history of cause them to lose oil pressure along with an early morning motor rattle,do your homework if buying used,we are pretty extensive with ones we buy cause it can be a costly mistake

also any chrysler car is odd about needing the trans. serviced to avoid long term problems..and thats not just sebrings that is all of them - wondering
