$3700 for a tranny rebuild?

Question 1
$3700 for a tranny rebuild?...  My 2003 T&C LXi totally stopped moving. No limp mode, just gone.

Reputable local tranny shop has taken it out, and it quoting me about $3700 bucks to rebuild it.

It includes $775 for the overhaul kit and $464 for the torque converter. I feel like those 2 prices are way out of range. Or am I missing something?

I'm willing to pay a little more for quality work / products but... yikes!

Answers
1)   too much take to a diffrent place see if there is multystate transmission shop in your town they rebuild trans for 1200 or as long as 900 - alex

2)   I would check with the dealer & get the price 4 a new trans. then u have a good starting point. Does their "o'haul kit" include front pump>valve body>discs>spring assembly & gears? Sounds very excessive 2 me, - Travis41

3)   I'd turnaround and run bec that shops sounds like their trying to rebuild two transmissions for that price,Be sure to shop around bec the average costs are 800 to 1800 and over 2,000bucks but not 3,700.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way be sure they give you a list of parts their changing in their quotes and be sure to check what warranty coverage their offering you too. - helpful bob

4)   This is what I do for a living and sure as I can be no overhaul package is $775. Mopar overhaul kits that include all you need except the torque converter are $195. Now that is from the dealership! The Torque converter should run anywhere between $190 to $300 from the dealer. That estimate is so high as to be just plain ridiculous. It should be no more than $2000 even if you have damage to planetary gears and other hard parts. Hell you could buy a chrysler re man transaxle and have it installed for under $2000. Take your vehicle elsewhere. - Mike J

5)   I agree. That's way too much. 2000.00 is closer to the norm. - done wrenching

6)   If you only knew the truth. if you went to a tranny shop like AMCO or clutch doctors, they are not going to rebuild it. There are plenty of rebuild companies that will sell them a rebuild for a fraction of the price.

I worked for a rebuild shop. I seen these places all the time. before I worked here, I had a quote of 2,700 for a Nissan tranny. A few years later I started working at the shop. I saw my tranny there for 375. These places do not sell to the public, only legetimate commercial places. So you figure out what it costs for a driver to drop off and pick up a core and rebuild, a tech to drop and install and what ever little expense involved. I figure about 500, so they would have pockketed 2200. Now that is profit.

so get a rebuild one on sale somewhere and have it installed by any backyard mechanic. - Frank

7)   That shop is trying to screw you. settle with them and tow your car home, get a scrap tranny with a clean bill of health and round up some buddies to install it for a case of beer - JB Sapp

Question 2
Squealing serpentine belt! Replaced it, still squeals! PT Cruiser.?...  The dealership replaced it and 5 months later, the new belt squealed worse than ever. It's been like this for years now, because i'm too cheap to fix it again and obviously, a new belt is not the answer.

It used to happen mainly in cold weather, now it does it all the time.

Is this serious? What's causing it?

Answers
1)   you need a new tensioner...and or a componant, ie alternator, power steering pump, needs to be repositioned and tightened, but my bet lies with a worn tensioner. a inexpansive fix, but your belt may be burned from sliiping a lot and may need to be replaced also. Get a gatorback belt and never worry about it again. - tampabaylive

2)   It could be too loose. If you have an idler arm it could be going out. Some vehicles don't, and you tighten them manually by moving the alternator or power steering pump. - Greg L

3)   Try a belt called gator this belt will make it quiet again, just ask the parts store about it then look at how the groove are made whis is what makes it quiet. - Scott W

4)   Have a good shop check the belt tensioner. This keeps your belt tight. It may need replacing. - C-Tech

5)   Could be power steering fluid. check the level of the power steering and top up if necessary. What year is your car - PT-TA

Question 3
2006 Chrysler 300 won't start and only makes a single click noise?...  2006 Chrysler 300 won't start and makes a single click sound when attempting to start. The stereo works, so the battery isn't dead. Any options or suggestions?

Answers
1)   The battery may still be dead.
It takes a lot more amps to turn the starter than to run the radio.
It is possible that the radio works, but there is not enough juice left to start the car.
That clicking noise tells me that the battery is indeed dead or the starter is gone. - skyking

2)   Open the hood and jump start the car at the post under the red cover. Go to a parts store or shop, have them check the battery. Good luck. - C-Tech

3)   I agree with Skyking. - bw626

4)   battery is dead. even though acc works it takes more energy to turn on a car than a radio. - Accd08

Question 4
what should i choose?...  Ok so it may be an obvious choice but i'm kind of in a bind. now i was lucky enough to be offered one car but as of today i'm being offered two. the first car is a (top of the Line) 2008 Chrysler Sebring Convertible Limited (fully Loaded) witch my grandmother is gonna give me when she is finished paying it off and i get my license and that was the plan since she first bought it. Now the car is beautiful with the red paint and tan leather seats and i would love to have it but then theres the second car. The second car is a (top of the line) 2000 Chevy Blazer LT (fully loaded) witch has been in my family for 10 years first it was my grandmothers and now its my aunts but today my aunt told me that i can have the blazer because she was gonna get a civic, she offered it to me cause she knows i love the truck it has alot of memories and that was the first car i ever drove. Both cars are in really good condition but i have mixed feelings on one hand i get an awesome convertible with a crap load of nice options, on the other hand i get the first car/truck i ever fell in love with and that truck hold alot of first why not let it be my first car you know. sorry for the long paragraph but just give me your opinion.
i live in Connecticut where there is alot of snow from November to February. top down weather is usually from April to September at the least.

Answers
1)   Go for the blazer - Johnny Rotten

2)   The blazer would be much better in snow, if that's what you're thinking, but I've known sebrings to be pretty cool, too. It depends on which one you like driving better. My family's experience with dodge/chrysler products hasn't always been the greatest, though. (Our dodge caravan was on its 3rd transmission when we sold it) Just saying. Also, stay away from chrysler's 2.7L V6. - bandgeek

3)   I, personally, would go for the Sebring. They are nice looking cars and because it is newer. Realistically, the Blazer would be a better car. The Blazer is probably more reliable, but I don't know how many miles are on it. The Blazer could potentially get you 250,000 miles, if it is maintained right. But being newer, the Sebring would seem like a better choice to me, and I am the son of a longtime Chrysler mechanic.

The Sebring is cooler, in more way than one, because it is a convertible. And it probably has newer, more modern options. The Blazer gives you memories and functionality. But your decision is about how long you want to own the car. The Sebring could maybe give you 170,000 miles, if maintained right, and since your grandma probably hasn't put a lot of miles on it, you can probably drive it longer and it won't be out of style by the time it quits maybe around 2020 or so. The Blazer, depending on mileage will last, at 14000 miles a year, until the same time, but is already pretty much out of style.

I normally would choose the Chevy, but in this case, I would go for the Sebring.

It really depends on if you want practicality or options. - bw626

4)   You should also consider that such a car may be expensive to insure. Check your insurance rates before buying one, for example here - carinsurance.deep-ice.com - Sam
