Question 3
How do I get a code on my PT Cruiser?...  I asked another question in car maint. bc my 2002 PT cruiser had a bucking problem twice last week. Sitting in my garage with it in Drive, it makes a clanking noise. I does not buck anymore. I read that someone gave an answer a year ago to some lady , she asked
" My 2001 PT Cruiser transmission. is slipping....." The guy answered and said she could get the code by "cycle the key on and off three times, ending with it on (on, off, on, off, on-with on being run, not start) I did that and got no code. Anyways, I suppose I'll have to take it back to the dealer where they serviced it back in July.
Thanks both. My husband used to always work on our cars but then new ones , most of it he can't. Since I bought my PT at the dealer in 2002, they always do the inspection and we don't think we ever got screwed. Yea, I know that the dealers charge more and we don't take our other vehicles to dealers. thanks again.
Oh, these were all good answers, don't know whick one to pick, but have to pick one. Thanks to all.

1)   I've heard of some cars that provide codes with using a key, but I always though those were the pre 1996 cars. But anyways, Auto Zone, Advanced Auto parts and most auto parts store will fetch the codes for free. They have a handheld device that plugs into a port under the steering wheel and it reads the codes. Write them down. Codes look something like P0000143

You can look up what the codes mean on sites like http://www.obd-codes.com/

Post the codes in another question, maybe someone can help you out better before you take it to the shop. At least be armed with the knowledge of what it likely is so they dont try to claim all kinds of things is wrong. I avoid dealer repair shops like the plague. They almost always cost 2-3 times then what a good reputable mechanic charges. - SharpGuy

2)   Its called a flash code and that went out back in '99 on most models. And even if you did get a flash it would start out with 12 and end with 55 in a certain pattern, best for you is to have a shop with a read out box that can plug into your data connector and get the codes. some shops will do it for free just to get your business for the repair, but dont fall into that because you can get screwed with the wrong job and out of money, make sure you take it to a good qualified shop - rick b

3)   Actually, OBD II was mandatory starting on vehicles built in 1996, but most were already using the new system by that time. So the old 2 digit codes were gone several years before 1999.

Most Chrysler vehicles can use the key cycle method to show some general codes, even newer than '02 vehicles (though I have seen some that it just won't work on), the codes will show in the digital odometer display, usually as a P with 4 numbers. For example, a P0300 is a random misfire code (it may just show the numbers, and eliminate the zero before the code, such as 300). The key cycling has to be done within about 5 seconds in order to show the codes.

If no codes are stored, it should display either a code P1684 (memory cleared within last 50 starts -- which basically means no problems stored), or "done".

If no codes are displayed, it will have to be diagnosed to find the problem. Some codes that are exclusive to Chrysler products just won't display on a code reader or aftermarket diagnostic reader. Of course, the factory diagnostic reader the dealer has will show all codes. - Mark B
