looking for a CHRYSLER PT CRUISER...BUT...i been told to steer clear...who can help?

i have been told to steer clear of these cars unless brand new, because around the 50000 mile electronics start going.
The engine management light comes on and it takes a lot of the power away when you're driving.

has anyone had the same problem or knows if this is a regular manufacturer fault??

please help

those cars are built on the dodge neon platform.very unreliable.they are considered throw away cars.if you can help it stay away from them

The PT Cruiser is a good car, if you like its style. Like all cars there are good and bad cars. The majoirty of them will be fine, but if you get a lemon then you have problems.

Have a look at the PT Cruiser forum - www.ptcruiserlinks.com/forum and ask questions in there. Get your proposed car fully checked by a mechanic/automobile association before you buy and get a warranty

Good luck

i heard something similar, i bought a japanese car instead which is very reliable. have a look at them.

Something you might want to consider, which is along the same theme as the PT is the Chevy HHR.

It's also a retro style and seems to get better reviews.

At a local car auction, examples struggled to make more than £1000.

Somebody doesn`t like them. Traders?

Well i know 3 people who bought one new, including a work colleague and one of my brother in laws. All three say it was the worst purchasing decision they ever made car wise! My brother in law says his is very uneconomical by todays standards, seems to have a very wide turning circle and the build quality is iffy.

the pt is built on the same platform as the neon just taller version =small cheap car.
Steve

i dunno about that, but what i do know is its resale value is very poor. so it's still a loss for you even if you buy it brand new.

Mark B got it right. I was until recently the sales manager at a Chrysler store and was on board when the car was introduced. The PT Cruiser is a restyled Neon.

looking for side marker lens font right side 70 duster?

check the paddock or year one.
Steve

I don't remember what the '70 Duster side marker lights looked like, but sometimes side marker lights interchanged between models and vehicle lines. Look around you may find the light from a '72 Dodge pickup (this is just an example) is the same as the '70 Duster. I know starting in '72 or '73 that the same side marker light was used across the A-body line, Plymouth and Dodge.

If you are doing a resto you'll definitely want one that is new rather than a "good" light for a driver.
Don't know everything !

They finally reproduce those, and they are available through some of the vendors advertised in mopar collectors guide magazine etc. Just so you know, the only mopars that use that front lens, are 70-71 valiant, duster, scamp, 70 roadrunner, gtx, belvedere, satellite 4 door and sta wagon.

E bay is a good source for parts...I,ve had to buy alot of hard to find parts there..Craigs list is another place to look in your area.Wildcats mopars in oregon is another...There are alot of dusters still out there it shouldn,t be that hard to find what you need...

Auto or standard tranny?
Need more details.
billranger3754

Had same problem with my caravan! It was the forward gear planetary that broke. Get ready to pay for a tranny rebuild or a used one. Sorry. but almost sure that is whats wrong. Nephew had the same problem with his (Sebring also) 2 yrs ago, same anwer.

low fluid or trans needs a overhaul
rick b

if auto trans.. it's an expensive high pressure problem..

manual trans ...it's the shifter cables...
Sophie B

All Sebrings are automatic. There is only one planetary gear; reverse is an additional gear set after the planetary. Low fluid would affect both forward and reverse. As Gregory House would say "you guys are idiots".

Since reverse works, the hard parts (gears and clutches) ahead of the reverse gear set must be OK. If you had first forward and reverse, but no second-third-overdrive, then hard parts might be suspects, because the reverse gear set is driven by first gear.

You have a bad solenoid pack. This is a group of electromagnets that control the shift behavior on most Chrysler vehicles. Replacement will be a few hundred dollars. OR, and this is unlikely, there is something wrong with the shift linkage. You need to visit a reputable service facility.

nice parents give you a car that doesnt run correctly lmfao could be anything from a tune up to a simple cleaning of the throttly body
wonderboy n

Kit what is happening, the way you describe it is that your idle control is not working properly. It could at one time someone thought they could fix a running problem by messing with the throttle body set screw.
This causes the airflow to be screwed up and the computer is trying to adjust for it and that is why the drop in idle, you would need to find a qualified Chrysler mechanic that knows how to set the Airflow correctly, not many around.
Also have the AIS motor checked for carbon build up or seat wear/leaks. It may need to be cleaned or replaced
And last very rare the TPS will be out of range. Usually if it is the car would die and your check engine light would come on
Nice parents, I turn fifty in 7months think they will buy me a Grand Cherokee?
Good Luck
rick b

So its only for today? The first day with your new car? The 41te trans in your car actually remembers driving styles, really! I bet you slow down quickly, unlike your parents or the previous driver. The tcu "trans mission control unit" , will learn your driving style and will compensate tomorrow. It learns the drivers driving styles. Good luck and Happy Birthday
scotts74birds

possibly check your idle air control valve
