Question 2
95 Chrysler New Yorker runs fine, but NO gauges (oil, fuel, rpm, overhead trip meter, etc.) or A/C.?...  New battery 3 weeks ago. Ran fine, then nothing. Where do I start troubleshooting

Answers
1)   For the gauges, check the fuses. - Cars4Charities

2)   Check fuse 14. Sometimes on LHS's 1995 model this one blows out and LHS and New Yorker are pretty much the same model. - Crystal Sunshine

3)   All this you mentioned have separate circuits. BUT they have two thing in common. They all run through the ignition switch and all go through a 'fuse link' next to the battery. Remove the covers around the switch first and check to see if there are any burned or discolored wires at the switch plug-in connector. If it is OK, then check the wires coming from the battery. They are bundled and wrapped near the battery. They are different colored for different resistance. Yours will probable be yellow or orange that you are looking for. When they burn out, they won't always burn through the insulation, so you may have to tug on them separately to find a burned out one. They must be replaced with the same color fuse link. If you use ordinary wire, you could burn the car up. - Jackolantern

how do I make my 2001 chysler 300m go faster?...

Answers
1)   take the engine out and push it down hill - sb_guitar7@sbcglobal.net

2)   The cheapest way is to make it lighter, just take out unneeded parts, like the back seats. For every 100lbs of sprung weight (above the suspension) you'll be about a tenth sec faster in a quarter mile. (10 lbs of unsprung weight will do about the same.) Or if you've got money to put into it get a turbo and race computer, cold air intake, or a huge shot of nitrous. If its governed (usually 107-115 mph) disable it.

Or you can just push the pedel on the right down farther. Lol - Mike Christ

and the rest of the spark plugs look good just numbers 3 and 5 were wet
yep coolent level does keep going down verry slow, does that mean somethin else
it ended up being a cracked head

Answers
1)   i agree with you. if your compression results are fine and high every where else but on NO 3 and 5, then it can be a head gasket block or head. if th coolant level is falling, that fits into that nasty puzzle. - mdk68gto, ase certified m tech

2)   Yep, you have a blown head gasket between 3 and 5 which is also going through a water passage in the gasket. The longer you drive this way, the bigger the chance you will burn a passage way through the leak into the head or block and a new gasket will not be able to seal it off. - Jackolantern

How is the Chrysler PT Cruiser?

Question 1
How is the Chrysler PT Cruiser?...  Is it good on gas? I heard that it's kinda slow and the seats are low. I'm a short person, so I can't have that. lol

Answers
1)   I think it was a failed attempt at bringing a classic car look to the 21st century.

People report that they get 20-21 mpg avg/city - Domgod

2)   IF UR READY TO SPEND ALOT OF MONEY ON REPAIRS, GET READY. ITS OK FOR FEMAILS UNTIL THEY BREAK DOWN. ONE THING AFTER ANOTHER. GOOD LUCK - Eddie Rivera

3)   horrible UGLY car that is not worth the money when you can get something so much better for the same money - gfraser92

4)   dont get it, its really ugly, the drive is no good it has no pickup and its going to need a lot of repairs. my best bet because your short and you want good gas milage-go for a mini cooper. they are a excellent drive have good pickup and milage and look good. - Joseph Solomon

5)   the chrysler pt cruiser is fine - blackopszombie

6)   This is a question that is really best answered by doing a little digging on the internet--as there are MANY sites out there with explicit (and exhaustive) info on PT Cruisers. Different models and years get different gas mileage. Over all, though, I would characterize its fuel consumption as middle of the road--neither a gas guzzler, nor especially fuel efficient.

The "kinda slow" thing is relative--and depends on which engine you get--which depends on the model and year. (I have a Turbo engine, and find it pleasantly zippy--but I've also test driven a non-Turbo, and had no problems with acceleration on it, either. I am not, however a 17 year old male, with a "need for speed"--I just want to accelerate smartly out of a traffic light, and go the speed limit. My 2003 PT Cruiser GT (automatic transmission, with Turbo) does that.)

As for the seat height--again, it depends on the model, and whether or not your seats are height adjustable. I'm 5'2", and one of the things I really like about my Cruiser, is that I can raise the seats up nice and high--and look DOWN on the road, instead of feeling like a cartoon of two eyes, peeping over the top of my steering wheel.

One thing that I DO find problematic about the driver's seat, though, is the head rest. It's too high for someone of my height--and I find it's extremely difficult for me to look around it, when checking over my shoulder, in my blind spot.

I strongly suggest you do two things: Google "PT Cruiser reviews" (Edmunds.com has great reviews, but there are many other good sources of info) and read up on the year and model you're interested in, and make sure that you know the package that gives you the features that are most important to you (ie, if you need a zippier engine, you'll want the Turbo, on the earlier models--there's a good Wikipedia article that explains the various trim packages and what they include).

If you're still interested--find one to test drive! That'll be the best way to know if it's a car that feels right to YOU.

(Personally--I adore mine. I've had cars with more torque--a 78 Chrysler New Yorker with an 8 cylinder engine, for one!--better gas mileage, more luxury features--but for sheer "cuteness", my baby can't be beat. I feel like I'm one of the "Cool Kids" everytime I get behind the wheel...knowing that I've waited for 10 years to get myself one of these!) - Aurora Dawn

1990 Plymouth Voyage will not start?...  Sometimes it sounds like the engine is locked up. After a few tries, the engine will turn over and start.

Answers
1)   Get a new car - Tobin

2)   If that is an old starter or the original starter it sounds like the starter is worn out maybe the brushes are shot or even the starter solenoid maybe faulty.I'd also recommend that someone handy with vehicles goes over all the battery/starter/alternator/engine block ground posts and all the grounds, check if the starter has a ground wire and disconnect these connections one at a time clean the wire o-ring connectors and the metal well with a wire brush and sandpaper, then use the automotive electrical circuit protection and lubrication jell on all the connections before you reconnect them.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way maybe someone can pop the starter off and either bring it to a parts store or starter re-builder shop and have it tested, also a shop or parts store can conduct alternator/battery tests have them checked too bec even a weak battery or weak charging system can cause poor starting problems.Note they can check/test all 3 of those circuits on the spot if you drive the vehicle to a parts store and ask them to show you the results on their test equipment. Also if the battery cables or connections are loose they can cause starting issues and if the cables going to the different devices I've mentioned are original or fairly old they can rot/corrode internally and cause problems so you may want to change them. - helpful bob

I drive a 2003 pt cruiser I just got the check engine light?

Question 1
I drive a 2003 pt cruiser I just got the check engine light?...  Car runs great but the check engine light flashes somestimes like when ur waiting for food in a drive through & i took to a mechanic all he said that the odb 2 read "PISTON 1" & then he said dont worry about there is nothing wrong i just want to know what u guys think?

Answers
1)   check engine lights sometimes come on just as a reminder to take your car in for service after so many miles

if you were told everything was fine, instead of being charged for more work, then you should be ok - John

2)   A flash is for a misfire. There is something wrong about a "don't worry" response to that.

Find a better shop. - alfredb1979

3)   well if this was a mechanic you trust then believe him, if you are worried there is a problem, take it to another mechanic, I garuntee you will find one happy to start slapping on parts needlessly and charging you happily for every dime he can. The choice is yours not mine its your car its your money what are you going to do? - roger

4)   I wouldn't listen to that mechanic. Get a second opinion. Most times the check engine light comes on for something very minor, like a gas cap that wasn't tightened, or possibly an oxygen sensor. Most of the common codes are related to governmental emissions control systems, and don't cause any severe damaged, but should still be addressed because they can cause a decrease in performance, and over time will likely get worse. Others are more severe, and require more immediate action to be taken. A FLASHING check engine light, IS an indicator of such a problem. If this mechanic said it was piston number 1, I'm assuming that you have a severe misfire in that cylinder, and it may damage your catalytic converter if not fixed.

Get it checked out. Don't listen to him. If there was really nothing wrong, you wouldn't have the light on in the first place, would you? ;) - paul

5)   It sounds like the mechanic knew that you've somewhat of a misfire in cylinder no1 and I'd probably recommend that you have any shop scan it for you.If you've not done a tune up in awhile I'd perhaps start with that.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way listen to the engine and when it's cold started feel the engine bec any misfire should be able to be heard and felt. - helpful bob

Question 2
Car repairs? chrysler sebring?...  2001 Chrysler Sebring will not start on first 2 tries but 3rd time it starts. It wants to start but almost as if I gotta build the gas up .. Odd , is it the fuel pump

Answers
1)   My friend has an older sebring... her starter went out.. sounds like the same thing.. my jeep is doing it too now. I would say yes probably the fuel pump, but take it to a dealer ship in town, and just talk to someone about it. - Zachary

2)   If the car turns over: IE starting but not cranking... the starter is working fine.

Usually, when the car takes a few attempts to start or takes an unusually long starting time to crank, it is a cam/crank sensor or possibly fuel pump. If it is trying to detect timing but can't, it will default to ECM programming. You can confirm or eliminate it being a fuel check ball (which holds the fuel in the line) by turning the key to on but not starting the car. Listen for the fuel pump whine. You may or may not hear it. Waiting a few seconds should prime the line with pressure. If it starts and runs, it isn't the fuel pump itself. If it doesn't take a few attempts to start, it may be loosing fuel pressure when the car sits a bit.

I'm betting more on a sensor. Is there a check engine light? - SG

3)   It maybe fuel pressure or fuel pump related but if the cables/wires going to the battery/alternator/starter/starter ground/engine block ground posts are loose or have any rust or corrosion that could cause the problem too.

What I'm wondering is if this happens more when the vehicles sits over night or sits awhile bec that could be the battery having bad/dead cells or it not being able to hold a full charge.Otherwise the starter/starter solenoid/starter relay could be weak or or faulty they can cause starting problems too.

There are several things that can cause starting issues one being the fuel pressure, weak battery, faulty charging system, faulty starter, it may require a tune up or a sensor such as the crankshaft or cam sensor , etc.

One thing you could do is leave the key in the run position a few mins before trying to start it and if that makes it start up a lot easier then the fuel pressure is probably the problem.Another test is try starting up the vehicle with the tank fairly full and try it at different tank levels. If it always wants to start up with more fuel in the tank this again leads to a fuel pressure, faulty fuel pump issue.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd recommend checking the fuel pressure at the fuel rail, have a parts store or shop conduct some free tests on the starter/battery and charging system, plus ask them if they can scan the system via the data port and the proper scanner. - helpful bob

4)   Must be the battery, or engine. Have it checked by a mechanic. If you don't trust any mechanic, you could diagnose it yourself.

I have a Sebring as well. Engine is Lxi 2.7L. You can ask here what might seem to be the problem. - Dick Bennett

Question 3
My 94 plymouth voyager turns off when I make a stop light?...

Answers
1)   Have the crank position sensor (CPS) checked. - Billy Jacked

2)   There are a lot of different things such as the crankshaft, camshaft, MAP sensor and even a faulty coolant temperature sensor can cause installing issue. If the engine requires a tune up or the fuel/gas mixtures are wrong the idle would be off and you should be noticing it when the engine is idling and when you're driving. For example the idle is a bit too low or you've a loose belt both can cause stalling problems especially when trying to stop.Performing a basic tune up, changing/checking the air filter, replacing the fuel filter, checking all the plug wires, vac hoses/vac lines/vac junctions, treating the fuel system, checking the belt, belt tension and belt tensioner.Note those tension pulleys are known to have problems, also check the ignition coil spark plug connections make sure their clean, the ignition housing should be checked for any signs of internal over heating such as cracks/bulges/discolouring.

Even rust and corrosion or loose connections at the battery/alternator/starter/engine block ground posts can cause stalling issues and you might want to over haul and clean these wire connectors and connections.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way you may want to get a free scan done at a parts store or shop or pull the codes yourself via the ignition. If you have the key in the Aux position then put it in the run position , go back to the aux position then run and back to aux then to the run position and leave it there. When you see the engine light flash once then pause and flash twice in a row that is code 12 and it's related to the battery being disconnected lately, code 55 means end of the stored codes.Note check anything that is related to the EGR valve and vac lines etc, plus try cleaning the throttle body with throttle body cleaner spray. - helpful bob

3)   EGR valve dirty caked with soot

Question 4
1996 chrysler concord starts up then dies?...  replaced idle control valve, checked fuel pump relay, checked fuel filter

Answers
1)   Check your TPS and MAF. If it dies slowly you might need a new fuel pump check for pressure. - Domgod

2)   The throttle position sensor could be causing that problem or you may have a fuel pressure issue. Here's a basic test that you can perform there is a valve on the fuel rail this is the fuel test pressure port, take the cap off and then use a key etc and push down on the valve. If gas comes gushing out you know at least that fuel is getting to the fuel rail , you can do this test with the gas pressure regulating valve on the fuel rail, simply remove it, and see how much gas comes gushing out.Normally you'd place a rag below the pressure valve or test port before releasing the pressure or removing the pressure valve , the pressure valve should have gas gushing out for a few seconds then gas still runs out a bit for it stops. If little gas comes out then you know that the problem is not enough fuel pressure.

Normally if a sensor like the TPS or MAP sensor etc is faulty the ECM should have detected the error and the engine light should of come on as well as the ECM should have a stored error code.Sometimes the engine light won't come on but there are stored codes so my suggestion is use the ignition and check for any codes. If you turn the key to the run position then to the AUX position then back to run then back to AUX then to run and leave it there you should see the engine light start to flash. The light may flash once then pause and flash twice in a row this is code 12 = battery was disconnected within the last 50 starts, if you see code 55 that means end of the stored codes.

Hope that helps and best of luck. By the way what engine is in your car? I've fixed many problems on all sort of makes and models of vehicles especially cars like yours in fact I own one like your car. Those have many problems and one is poor wiring, another is problems with inner tie rod bushings and problems with the ECM.I've the original factory service manual and schematics/diagrams etc and if you want any more help or advice feel free to contact me. - helpful bob

What is the fuel economy on a 66 Plymouth Fury III?...  I found a Fury III going to training today for $4500 and am contemplating getting it. The biggest question is what the fuel economy for it is. Also some suggestions to make it better would be appreciated :)
Edit: Yes, it has a V-8 under the hood, yet only has 33k miles on it. It is in excellent condition (for its age).

Answers
1)   Depends on the engine. Most probably a gas guzzling V-8 with 200 k or more, in which case you'd be lucky to get 10 mpg. Those engines were also designed to run on leaded gas, which is hard to find these days. It will get even worse gas mileage on unleaded. - Valor D

2)   It's a great classic. It is NOT a daily driver. Fuel mileage should not be one of your concerns. - Dennis

3)   In 1966 premium leaded fuel was 30-35 cents a gallon and fuel mileage was not a consideration in the selling of a new car, long, wide and quad headlights were the order of the day.

The Fury III is a large car and will not handle like cars built today, probably has drum brakes and no intermittent wipers, may have AC. However they were nice riding cars and had engines up to 440 cubic inches (available late in the model year), most were equipped with 318 or two barrel 383 engines.

This would not be a good everyday driver if fuel mileage is a consideration. If I were to purchase this vehicle, I would install a 383, if not already equipped with one, heads with hardened valve seats, an aluminum dual plane intake with a well tuned 600 CFM carburetor, early '70's "Magnum" cast iron exhaust manifolds and true dual mandrel bent exhaust system no smaller than 2 1/2 inches in diameter.

reason why the horn and cruise would stop working on a 2000 crysler grand voyager?

Question 1
reason why the horn and cruise would stop working on a 2000 crysler grand voyager?...  I have a 2000 crysler grand voyager in my shop and customer complains that the horn and cruise both went out at the same time, i am thinking the ground wire is shot

Answers
1)   I'm thinking the horn is shorted internally. Pull the connection on the horn and see if the fuse blows. Have you even checked for a blown fuse yet? You've got a "shop" are a mechanic yet think a ground wire will stop both the horn and the cruise to stop working? How is a ground circuit hooked up to both? I'd expect the B+ for each is on the same fuse! - thebax2006

2)   Hi Ron,

chances are you have a blown fuse.

sometimes you can take the van to Autozone and they will put a tester and tell you what codes are going off telling you what needs to be fixed. They will do this for free.

I just wrote my new amazon book. - Black Belt Bob

3)   The horn and cruise both go through the 'clock spring' under the steering wheel. We had a recall on a lot of these back around then and replaced a truck load. Some has a life time warranty on them because it is part of the safety features. (Air bag). Check with your Chrysler/Dodge dealer and see if yours is one of them. - Jackolantern

4)   It could be that these two devices are fed by the same fuse and the fuse is blown or they share a common ground junction that is rusted/corroded or it has a clock spring problem.

Hope that helps and best of luck. - helpful bob

5)   It might be a coincidence that they quit at the same time. I would look at the fuses first. Get some one to press the horn and listen for the horn relay clicking. If it does click, tap the horns with a hammer while sometimes this will get it working again.
For cruise control, turn on the key , turn the cruise on and off and listen with your ear near the servo. It should click. If not the servo is pooched. If it clicks You might have cruise switch in the steering wheel or where ever the switch is. - Donny

5)   I would say your CV joints are shot. Once the rubber boots split you will lose all the grease in there and the bearings will wear out in a very short time. - Donny

Whats the best engine i can put in a 2000 Chrysler Cirrus?...  I am looking to build a rally car and i want both horsepower and torque. I need help please.

Answers
1)   The Cirrus is a terrible car to build a rally car with..it's FWD, heavy as hell, has very poor crash ratings. Honestly, look into an older Impreza or Legacy and try with that, you wont go ANYWHERE with this, it's just too bulky, and FWD isn't the best for rally. - steven

how do i know if my roadrunner has a 2bbl or 4bbl?

Question 1
how do i know if my roadrunner has a 2bbl or 4bbl?...  I have a 1972 plymouth roadrunner,6.6 liter 400 engine automatic, all stock how can i find out if my car has a 2bbl or 4bbl?& if someone can please explain what both mean thanks!

Answers
1)   bbl is short for barrel and when referring to carburetors it is how many tubes with venturis the air passes through. Take the air cleaner housing off and look at the carb, open the choke butterfly valves and count them - wondering

2)   Take the air cleaner top off and look at the carburetor -- if it has four throats/holes (look under the plate covering them), and it does, it is a four barrel.
If it had two throats/holes it would be a two barrel but it isn't.
It means you have four nozzles/jets feeding the eight cylinders, as opposed to two if it was a two barrel.
That engine was rated at 255 h.p.
Original carburetor was a Carter 650cfm Thermoquad. What this means to you is that the front barrels (primaries) will be smaller than the back two (secondaries). This gives better fuel mileage at less than WOT (wide open throttle) and is similar to the Rochester Quadrajet in that respect. - Lone Wolf

3)   I believe in 72 all 400 road runner engines had the 4 barrel thermoquad. - done wrenching
