What fluid should I use in my Mopar 904 tranny?

Question 1
What fluid should I use in my Mopar 904 tranny?...  I just had a 72 904 rebuilt. The shop is closed now, so I can't ask them! D*mn it! I went to auto store and they said ATF Dex/Merc.

I just want to be sure. I sometimes wonder if it even matters???

Answers
1)   I recommend Mopar ATF 3 or ATF 4. ATF 3 is what was recommended by Chrysler. ATF 4 is the latest synthetic version and is very good. - C-Tech

2)   ATF + 3, don't use synthetic. - Michael

3)   C-Tech is right and Mopar has a couple of good information web sites also - carlar58

4)   Dexron is what the factory used and will work just fine.Personally I run type F in the ones I've built for drag racing. Also on the transmission dipstick it will tell you the proper fluid to use. - Amy m

5)   If the transmission was built to 1972 specs I would use Dexron/Mercron as that was an acceptable ATF to use that year. Chrysler started using ATF+3 (a synthetic fluid) in 1990 and now uses ATF+4.

Not sure what, if any damage, would occur if ATF+4 would be used in a '72 spec built 904.

And it does matter in later Chrysler transmissions, Dexron/Mercron will ruin a post '90 transmission. - Don't know everything !

6)   Dexron would be the standard fluid, type F for Fords if you want a harder shift. We used these fluids in drag cars back in the 60s and 70s. - Samboski

Question 2
I have a 2005 Chrysler PT Cruiser GT 2.4 HO Turbo. Oil light issues.?...  When I start the car in the morning the oil light will be on and stay on, but if I shut the car off and turn it right back on it stays off. This only happens during the cold weather. And usually only on the first start of the day or if the car has been sitting for several hours. What would cause this?

Answers
1)   those are UGGLLLLLLYYYYYY. - hey what's going on?

2)   Either you have a bad oil pressure sending unit, or an oil pick-up in the oil pan which is clogged. I would try replacing the sending unit first. - C-Tech

3)   Check your oil level, but I wonder two things:
What weight oil are you using? In general, the thickest oil you should use is 5W30. Your owners manual may even recommend a lighter oil than that. 10W30 is too thick for modern engines in cold weather.

What brand of oil filter are you using? The famous orange ones are known for drainback issues, where the oil drains back back down past the filter's check valve down into the oil pan. The oil then must be pumped back up when you start the car. The drain back could take over night, or several hours. You would notice it more in the morning because the oil is colder and thicker. You probably hear a slight clattering until the light goes off. Try Purolator, or Mobil 1 filters (if you use synthetic oil).
The only other reason I can think of is if your throttle body is very dirty or you need some other "tune up" part/sensor, etc. and the car is not idling well (to slowly). You don't mention any running problems though.

A side note: With a turbo, you should be using synthetic oil. It doesn't build up in the oil lines (like cholesterol), and end up starving the turbo for oil (which kills the turbo unit). Also, let your engine idle for a minute before you shut it off to let the turbo shed heat. This is more important after driving hard, or at higher speeds. Consult your manual for the weight of oil. Being a turbo, they MIGHT recommend slightly thicker. - GTCturboII

4)   Sounds like you may need a new oil pressure gauge. The only way to know is to have the sensor checked. - Kimberly

Question 3
1965 plymouth valiant slant v6?...  this car was sitting for long time and the engine its stuck. the water pump doesn't turn and the pistons are all stuck. i want to know how much would it be for a shop to get it working or is there any way i can get it working. i live in canada vancouver b.c.

Answers
1)   prolly like 300 to get it fixed.. but once its fixed keep that car slant six's are the best and strongest engine ever! - lexicarssupra

2)   It's not a V6, it's a straight 6 that's not vertical, hence the term "slant 6"

You will need a complete rebuild if the engine is seized. Unless this Valiant is a convertible, it's probably not worth it.

. - PMack

3)   A 65 Valiant is getting to be a rare car. Especially if it's a 2 door hard top. 4 doors are plentiful. So are the slant 6es. You can buy a running good slant 6 for about 50 to 100 bucks. There everywhere. The reason for it is because they don't break. There one of the toughest engines ever made. I'm sure you can find one in a junk yard there. As many as there are that still run perfect and don't burn oil you should be able to find them everywhere. Two things to look for when buying a slant 6. oil leaks. Slant 6es are prone to leak oil at the oil filter adapter and at the spark plug cups. The seals get old and leak. There made from paper. They will also leak at the crank. I personally have seen slant 6es with over 3 hundred thousand miles need nothing but a reseal.

There is one thing you can try if you want to. You can pour about 2 to five gallons of brake fluid or trans fluid down the carb. It will dissolve any rust that has formed in the cylinders and unstick the rings. You can try it. Let it soak until you see brake fluid/trans fluid coming out of the oil pan plug hole. I've seen it work. As long as the rust is very thin on the cylinder walls. - Lex Luthor

4)   If it has been sitting for a "long time" (especially outside) you will face a number of problems in addition to the engine being stuck - including electrical and fuel

for instance the fuel tank will need to be removed and cleaned out and the fuel pump may need to be replaced - for a shop just to do that would be $300 (assuming the fuel tank is not all rusted out)

I would say, if the engine can get broken loose without a rebuild - $1500 for a shop to do - roadrunner426440

Question 5
I own a 1974 RoadRunner/GTX, is this a rare cars? It is a u code car with 2 data plates because it is loaded w?...  RM21U4G is VIN, I was informed that only 356 were built, would like to know how rare this car is, and out of the 356 what # build was it?

Answers
1)   Search the web for forums devoted to the '71-74 Roadrunner/GTX. Any muscle car that hasnt rotted away or beaten to death and is still solid is rare IMHO and I've had muscle cars since I was 15 so Ive had a "few"." - pontiacpowered71

2)   It really is not a gtx. This was just a sticker option for the last year of the roadrunner...To try to sell extra cars...If it were a true GTX the vin would be RS.....Mopar Action did a write up on this car... - Johnny Rotten

3)   It is indeed a rare car. Starting in '72, the GTX was a cosmetic option on the RoadRunner and the Roadrunner was based on the Belvedere body, hence the second letter M in the VIN and was the last year of the B-body Roadrunner. See http://www.allpar.com/model/index.html for a little more info.

I can't tell you with any accuracy if 356 was the number built in '74 and can't tell you what number it was as the numbers were in sequence for the Belvedere line. But I can say with more than one data plate it has to be pretty well optioned, a car definitely worth keeping/restoring or whatever. - Don't know everything !
