I would put just automatic transmission fluid, you can look at the stickers under the hood to see if takes a specific type other wise put standard transmission fluid in.

Call the dealership. To be for sure, you don't want to put in the wrong fluid and mess up a good transmission.

It may be stamped on the dipstick. You also need to know if the ATF is checked in Park or Neutral. The engine needs to be warmed up and running. The wrong ATF will ruin the transmission, so calling the dealer is a must if you can't figure it out. Don't trust a guess on this answers.

All transmission oil cans have the type of oil it is on the can. Match that to the label under the hood or on the dip stick. Your owners manual has that info also. It it were me and I was near a dealership, I would go there and get Mo Par ATF4 and use it. It is the latest in Chrysler transmission oil and it takes the guess out of what to use. It is formulated especially for that transmission.

if it's automatic dexron III will do all transmissions, Ford used to take type F but you can't find it anymore so the Type III is replacing all other fluids.

Chrysler 7176 +4 ATF. Use nothing else or you risk transmission failure. Chrysler has used synthethic transmission fluid since 1990.

Oil filter error=engine failure? Had son change oil on wife's 08 pt cruiser, he took off the old filter ...but?

well when he took the old oil filter off the O RING pulled out of the filter body and stayed stuck to the block, then he screwed the new filter on over that o ring the new filter couldn't seal as there wasn't enough room for 2 o rings. Wife jumps in car and oil starts coming out. After 15 minutes the oil light comes on and for some reason she kept going and about 2 minutes later the engine quit running. She said there was NO knocking, grinding, popping, smoking or anything. I drive out and check the oil... none on dip stick. Filled with new oil and filter and it turns over sounding normal but won't start. Does the engine have a electronic shut down to protect the engine ? I heard that theres a senser at the oil pump that shuts down the fuel pump and the runs out of gas quickly. She said she checked the temp gage and it didn't get hot. She said it just turned off. Car only has 15,000 miles on it. Tried unhooking the battery for 30 minutes hoping the computer would reset and engine would start. Is there a fuel pump reset button somewhere like my old taurus had in the trunk? Need solid advice. Thanks in advance.

There is no saftey shut off switch when the engine is out of oil, that is why there is a check engine light, oil pressure guage or light that did come on and the wife ignored. And since your boy double gasketed the oil filter once the oil starts to flow past the gaskets it will pump all 4 or 5 qrts out in seconds. The engine has seized and scored the walls and pistons, even though it seized, after the engine cools in can turn over but will not start do to lack of compression, Unhooking the battery wont do a thing to save the engine, all you did was rest the computer and errased all the adaptive memory in the trans and reset the radio
Engine replace or overhaul will be needed and if the dealer figures out what happened you wont be covered under Chrysler warranty

Well.. I'd say that the double o-ring seal .. .. nice gesture.. bad timing.. always clean off your surface area of old rings before installing a new filter .. but lets not beat a dead horse... *smile*

It should be equipped with the "ASD" type system which is supposed to shut down the vehicle in the event of one or more of the primary systems failing.. it's done by shutting down the fuel pump relay ... which probably needs to be reset ..

also .. you must consider the mechanical damage suffered.. such as head damage.. etc..

honestly I'd consult the dealer.. for I myself an a lowly GM technician ..

You have either broken the timing belt , or scored the cylinder walls so it won't hold compression. Either way, it will be an expensive fix. Consider it an expensive lesson for the son in the proper way to change the oil and for the wife to not ignore warning signs on the dash. A lot of dealer service departments are slow, they may goodwill warranty the engine if you bought it new.

The oil filter change for professionals includes looking at the old filter AND eng block to be sure the old o-ring is not stuck on block. You are not the first one that that has happened to either. In any case, it does not take long to dry a bearing up from no oil pressure and then eng locks.

Yes, these new engines do have an electronic shut down to prevent the engine from excessive damage. You will have to have the vehicle taken to the dealer and they will hook it up on a computer and start the PT cruiser for you....

Well don m, What happened is when the engine ran out of lubricant the cam seized and snapped the timing belt. The bottom end of the engine may still be OK. Snapping the belt may have saved the rest of the engine from going south as well. But you definitely will have to check out the head. Even though it's not a free spinning engine, sometimes you bend a valve when the belt brakes and sometimes you don't. And don't be too hard on the boy, what happened to him is every mechanic's nightmare. It happens more time to experienced technitions than you may think!

watch how you take it out do the same to put it back in make sure when you put the torque converter in the gearbox that you wiggle it in you should hear a couple of clicks otherwise if you try to tighten it up everything will jam depends on the car you"ll up to 8 litres of oil if its an auto thats the best i can tell you without being there

Go to the parts store and buy a repair manual for the car you're wanting to fix. It will give step by step instructions and should also give the proper torque specs for tightening the bolts when re-installing (torque wrench will be required to do the job properly).

If you've done any of your own work before, you can probably do it. You'll know your skill level better than anyone, so once you've read the repair manual on how to do this, you can decide whether you want to try it yourself or not.

Had same problem with my caravan! It was the forward gear planetary that broke. Get ready to pay for a tranny rebuild or a used one. Sorry. but almost sure that is whats wrong. Nephew had the same problem with his (Sebring also) 2 yrs ago, same anwer.

if auto trans.. it's an expensive high pressure problem..

All Sebrings are automatic. There is only one planetary gear; reverse is an additional gear set after the planetary. Low fluid would affect both forward and reverse. As Gregory House would say "you guys are idiots".

Since reverse works, the hard parts (gears and clutches) ahead of the reverse gear set must be OK. If you had first forward and reverse, but no second-third-overdrive, then hard parts might be suspects, because the reverse gear set is driven by first gear.

You have a bad solenoid pack. This is a group of electromagnets that control the shift behavior on most Chrysler vehicles. Replacement will be a few hundred dollars. OR, and this is unlikely, there is something wrong with the shift linkage. You need to visit a reputable service facility.

Mark B got it right. I was until recently the sales manager at a Chrysler store and was on board when the car was introduced. The PT Cruiser is a restyled Neon.
