How can I remove pin striping from my car?

Question 1
How can I remove pin striping from my car?...  I just bought a car (used--but new to me) I love. But it has pin striping along the side. Is there a way I can safely remove it myself or would I have to take it to a shop? I was able to remove a bit just by pulling it, but it's taking too long...only tiny strips are coming off at a time. Thanks!!

Answers
1)   just take the time to do it, it might take a while but it is cheapest. but there is always the shop. - Rob

2)   Use a hair dryer and warm up the striping then it will peel off quite easily in one pull! - Brian

3)   If you go to a good automotive paint store they will sell you a decal eraser...It,s just a big rubber wheel that you can put on a drill and erase that pin stripping off your car..Be careful not to use at too high of a speed so you don,t go through the paint...Also soaking the pin stripping with wd 40 will help unglue the adhesive.. - Johnny Rotten

4)   Break out the hair dryer, something to sit on and go at it, hopefully there is not a clear coat over the stripes which I've seen in the past on factory pinstripes.

It is time consuming to do but the hair dryer will help get longer strips off. Take your time, don't rush, try a fairly low heat setting first and move up a notch at a time, you can ruin paint if you're not careful. You can't do it all in 30 minutes so plan on at least one or two hours depending on the number and width of the stripes.

I've seen the "pinstripe erasers" ruin paint. - Don't know everything !

Question 3
1997 Chrysler Sebring JXi convertible sensor issues.?...  I just recently bought a 1997 Chrysler Sebring convertible. The lady I bought it from said she parked it due to the fact that it wouldnt pass inspections since it needed an O2 sensor. We bought the car at a deal. We have replaced the thermostat, as we can see that is the only major issue, since the car was trying to over heat. My question is this, since their is NO check engine light on, will I have any problems getting this car inspected in North Carolina. I know usually when the 02 sensors go out it triggers the check engine light to come on. As I say their is no light on and i know it works cause when you turn the key to start the engine the check engine light does light up.

Answers
1)   That's good, for now. Considering the age of the car & the fact it will surely light up on the day of inspection, I would double check them. They are easy to remove, but not necessarily easy to get at. You can buy for about $10 a O2 sensor socket at the parts store. - The Eagle Keeper

2)   disconnect battery for a few hours to clear old codes or go to auto zone they will clear all codes for free if a real problem exists it will get stored after driving for awhile - dave

3)   Well it sound like the thermostat was the fix to your problem. But you will also need to start and stop with about 50 + miles of driving, this will reset your emission monitors. DO NOT disconnect your battery, even though this is some kind of fix all that a lot of people THINIK will some how clear codes and reset everything this is not correct. You disconnect the battery your emission monitor will kick and cause you to fail your emission scan test until you have started and stop the car along with over 50 miles of driving. And Auto zone can not reset your monitors just by clearing codes
And as you turn on the car and the light does come on and then goes off, that is just a self check - rick b

I have a 1997 Chrysler Town and Country?...  3.8 FWD with a 41TE Transmission. I just installed a used Transmission from a salvage yard and when I started it up, the engine reeves up and acts like it wants to go into gear, but slips out. Is this a sensor problem or did I get a bad Transmission? It replaced my old one because it just slipped and didn't go.

Answers
1)   probably the linkage is not set properly but the revving/ don,t know - dave

2)   Wrong or bad trans, a 97 41te doesn't mean a other year 41te will interchange with your 97, reason- updates inside the trans and or different trans controller, You trans part number has to be compatible with your van, engine controller and trans controller - rick b

3)   I believe you got a bad trans. All 41TE trans. have to be programed when installed but they all will have low and second and reverse gear without the speedometer working until programed. All 41TE trans are the same with the exception of the ones that have been updated because of various problems. - Jackolantern

I own a chrysler neon 2000 and it shudders when it is in park, reverse? why? I changed the transmission fluid?...

Answers
1)   possibly needs band adjustments (tranny shop) and hopefully you replaced the filter with the fluid - 89 z71 step side 6'' lif

2)   shaking in park means the engine is not running smoothly possible vacuum leak, or worse head gasket going bad usually 70+ thousand miles - dave

3)   If you mean it's kicking or bucking or stuttering or jerking one reason could be electrical, another internally transmission related and it could be that the vehicle requires a transmission shop or dealership or mechanic to place the transmission module=TCM into the learning mode.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way once the transmission fluid and filter was changed or if the fluid was worn down etc the internal pressure switches and transmission fluid pressures change and there fore the TCM needs to relearn and even during the learning mode the transmission can stutter or jerk etc while its learning and it could take up to 250 miles before it totally relearns.Note the dealerships may have a service bulletin or recall or a program or flash update that exists involving this problem so be sure to check with them just have your VIN numbers handy. - helpful bob

Can I leave the back door open for extended amounts of time without it running down my battery?

Question 1
Can I leave the back door open for extended amounts of time without it running down my battery?...  I own a 2007 PT Cruiser.

Answers
1)   how long?
20 minutes an hour should be ok
overnight might run down the battery - Dave87gn

2)   Yes, i left it for hours and still got the battery, hope this helps - Faisal

3)   It depends on how good your battery is. On a fully charged battery an hour with any lamp on will not damage you requirements for the starter. If you drive the car , and are constantly refilling a good battery with a healthy charging system a half hour will not hurt you. Have fun with your car and buy yourself a battery charger just in case. - Joseph

4)   If you have an interior "light defeat", which turns out the interior lights when a door is opened for an extended period of time, use that to turn out the light.

If you have one it will be on the headlight switch and rotate is either all the way clockwise or all the way counterclockwise, can never remember which way. One way will turn on the interior light(s) regardless of door position and the other way will turn out the lights if the switch has that capability. - Don't know everything !

5)   Most Chrysler made cars and trucks from around 2000 up use the body module to operate all lamps including headlamps. They have timers that will automatically turn off any lamp except glove box after a predetermined amount of time has elapsed after being turned on. You can check yours by leaving the door open and simply stay away from the car for around 10 minutes. If the body module sees no other activity going on in that time, it should turn off the lamps. Closing the door and opening it back up will turn it back on. - Jackolantern

Question 3
How do you change the brake fluid on a 1989 Chrysler New Yorker?...  so my car breaks are pretty much in need of some new break fluid. my car keeps yelling at me every day i don't change it, and honestly I'm a little scared to drive it before i get this problem fixed. i would look in the manual but i don't have one, so can you just tell me where the brake fluid goes, cus that would be just fantastic :)

Answers
1)   Well, cars aren't designed to turn a light on, or tell you that you need to change the fluid. The light may be on for LOW fluid, but never "change brake fluid"

Google your car's make and modle, say, "Ford Taurus brake fluid reservoir" make sure to use "Brake fluid reservoir" after the make and modle. Also there is a cap on it, or a silver/grey lid with a metal strap arm over it... that's it.

Or take it to autozone... or some place like that, they can do it for you probably for nothing. You'd have to buy the fluid though - Dombrus

2)   I have driven since 1973. owned thirty cars. Not once have I ever heard of changing brake fluid. I have done a dozen brake jobs on my cars over the years. never changed brake fluid. I think your misinformed big time. - ClarkL

3)   If your brakes are squealing, then you need to get the brakes themselves checked out. Same if it has a brake light on or is giving a check brakes message.

Some vehicles do have a low brake fluid warning, but when brake fluid is low, it's normally due to either worn out pads, or a leak in the system, which means you need to have the brakes checked out.

While there's no easy way to simply change brake fluid, a brake fluid flush is a good idea if the fluid has absorbed too much water. Brake fluid absorbs water and other contaminants over time, and can become less effective, or even cause corrosion inside the brake system.

I don't believe in too many of the flush services sold on cars these days, but coolant flushes and brake fluid flushes are both a good idea to do when they're needed. A shop trying to sell you the brake fluid (or coolant) flush should have test strips (or other tester) to show you against a chart that shows when the fluid is too dirty or not effective enough and needs flushing.

The brake fluid reservoir is under the hood, near the driver's side of the firewall, but it's a good idea to let someone who knows what they're doing to check it and top it off if necessary, they should do this when checking the brakes. - Mark B

4)   Leah, your car doesn't squeal because you need to change brake fluid. In fact the brake fluid was meant to last forever as long as it isn't contaminated with oil or other foreign substances. As long as you use DOT-3 brake fluid you should never have to change it. The squeal is caused by one of two things. Either the front or back brake pads are worn out or they are contaminated with dust. Three or four good hard stops from 50 miles an hour out on the highway will heat and burn the dust off and stop the squeal. If it doesn't, then you probably need new pads. - Jackolantern

Question 3
If window regulator on 01' Chrysler Sebring LXI is bad would it still make the window go down?...  Its the rear driver window on a 2001 Chrysler Sebring LXI. The window motor works is ok, got a new switch and it still didn't go up but it will go down. So i figure its the regulator or some wires. I can't even push the window up all the way after I took the door panel off

Answers
1)   O man that sucks we had the same problem with our 91' town-car the window went down great but never went back up we had to change the entire thing like window motor it might be happening because of connections BUT if it was wiring connections then it shouldn't be coming down so i really think the motor is crapping out on you the best thing to do would be to change the motor and if it still doesn't work then its definitely the wiring another thing could be is that you either misaligned it when you put it back OR maybe pulled a bit too hard and slightly disconnected the wiring try taking it apart and be gentle and try then and if it still doesn't work then get a new motor for it it doesn't have to be new just get it off a scrap car and if you still have problems then its the wiring
good luck - Nata

2)   Window motor and regulator are just fine. I take that you replaced the rear door window switch, since that didn't fix the problem it is going to be a wiring problem or the master window switch. To get the window up, Take two pieces of wire and hook to the battery, disconnect the electrical plug from the window motor and touch the wires to the terminals on the motor (switch positions of wires if it doesn't go up ). Leave the motor unplugged for it doesn't go back down. - Gregory A

3)   Does the motor try to move at all when trying to roll it up?

If yes, then it's likely the regulator is bound up.

If no, then it's likely the master switch on the driver's side door, but could also be a pinched or broken wire.

If the motor is getting power to lower the window, but not to raise it, then the motor is OK, it's something before the motor causing the problem, most common cause is the master switch (all the windows go through the master switch).

If you're not sure whether it's getting any power to the motor or not, you can use a voltmeter or a test light at the connector to the motor to see if it's getting power when you hit the switch. - Mark B

Question 4
Why are the struts on my PT Cruiser grounded electrically?...  It does not have ABS, and there are no other wires leading to the wheel or strut...

Answers
1)   Is probably more for radio noise. - Silverstang

2)   Probably because of the different metals used the ground strap is to prevent electrolysis - the seizing together of different metals in contact with each other. - C-Tech

3)   It keeps the struts at the same potential as the rest of the car. In other words, it limits static buildup. Any time you have a body that generates friction, there is always an electric potential.
CTech is close with his answer explaining the galvanic effect where dissimilar metals will act like a dipole. Generally, static charges are greater where there is lower relative humidity in the air. Since the manufacturer doesn't know where the cars wind up going, they install the strap on every car built. - Delamothe

4)   They are there in case the strut assembly somehow doesn't get a good ground with the rest of the car. Back when the front wheel drive cars made by Chrysler first came out, we had problems with the right front wheel bearing going bad on low mileage cars. What was happening was the engine wasn't grounded good with the body and the generated current from the alternator was going through the right wheel bearing to complete the circuit to the body and back to the battery. This caused sparking within the bearing and would etch out the bearing surface and cause premature bearing failure. You will find various other ground straps on the car chassis if you know where to look. - Jackolantern

Question 5

- Mark B

CAN A TRANSMISSION FROM A 1992 CHRYSLER FIFTH AVE. BE REMOVED AND PUT IN A 1996 CHRYSLER LHS?

Question 1
CAN A TRANSMISSION FROM A 1992 CHRYSLER FIFTH AVE. BE REMOVED AND PUT IN A 1996 CHRYSLER LHS?...  I found a 1996 Chrysler LHS for sell and my 1992 Fifth Ave. still runs great but the shruts went out and they are $300.00 each. I hope the transmission will work and fit in the 1996 Chrysler LHS. All that's wrong with it is it needs a transmission. Can anyone help me?

Answers
1)   No, it will not swap over. They are completely different set-ups and will not work in place of each other.

I'm figuring the $300 per strut is either an installed price, or you have the air-ride struts, and those are rebuilt air strut prices (new air struts would be $1000 or more each). If that's $300 for a standard strut, not installed, that's way, way out of line on pricing, even the Mopar struts are only around $100 each for your car. - Mark B

2)   No the two transmissions aren't switchable but you should be able to find struts a lot cheaper then 300 bucks a piece if you shop around you should be able to find at least a set of rebuilt struts for about 300 for the pair, have you checked online and on ebay etc bec honestly 300 a piece is quite expensive unless their heavy duty top of the line struts.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way if you look around you might find a good used transmission for that vehicle at a u pick auto wreckers for 100 to 300 bucks or so.Not sure if you're aware of this or not but most struts sold now a days don't even come with the spring but a few suppliers have started to supply complete struts , most ppl buy the strut without the springs and use their old springs by using a spring removal tool that you can rent or even borrow at some stores and they simply use their old springs if their still good etc. - helpful bob

3)   With enough motivation, anything is possible! Honestly, I think so, with the right adapter kit. Basically you'd need to change your bell housing off the transmission and get one that fits in your car, then it should bolt right in! Good Luck! - vampyrtrivial

4)   The answer is no, Tammy. They are entirely 2 different transmissions. - Jackolantern

I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?

Question 1
I just changed the alternator and battery on my 1966 Chrysler New Yorker and now it won't run?...  I JUST REPLACED THE BATTERY AND THE ALTERNATOR BUT IT WON’T RUN. THE BATTERY DIED ON ME AND IT SEEMED AS THOUGH IT NEEDED TO BE REPLACED BASED ON HOW OLD IT WAS SO I STARTED THERE. AFTER A FEW DAYS IT STARTED TO REPEAT HAVING A HARD TIME STARTING NEEDING A JUMP TO START SO I MADE THE NEXT MOVE TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR. WITH THE ALTERNATOR REPLACED AND ALL CONNECTIONS TO THE ALTERNATOR CLEANED, CONNECTIONS RESTORED IN CORRECT LOCATIONS AND CORRECT BELT TENSION I CANNOT GET IT TO STAY RUNNING. THE ENGINE TURNS OVER AND SOUNDS LIKE IT WANTS TO RUN BUT DIES WITHIN ABOUT 2 SECONDS. I CHARGED THE BATTERY AND TESTED THE VOLTAGE MAKING SURE IT GOT A FULL CHARGE BUT IT STILL WON’T GO. I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE CLAMPS FOR THE BATTERY POSTS ARE A LITTLE COROADED SO THOSE ARE GETTING REPLACED ASAP AS WELL AS REPLACING THE VOLTAGE REGULATOR. ALSO, IT WONT START OFF OF A JUMP START... ANY OTHER SUGGESTIONS?

Answers
1)   less typing in caps and more buying a newer car. - Dreamland

2)   sorta limited on info but 1966 new yorker im sure still has a points ignition system. these can be very picky to get right. i would take the dist cap off and sand the points or replace them (they're cheap). you will need to set them with a fealer guage.. good luck hope this helps

http://www.uartech.com/ - Tory

3)   gotta reset the alarm system/thats what is now shutting you DOWN/no points in that system - ken k

4)   It might be a bad ground. This might sound crazy but connect one side of your positive jumper cables to the connection on the starter and ground the negative side, then connect the other ends to your battery and try to start it. If it starts then it has to be the battery's ground or the connection to the starter. - Sam

5)   If your '66 still has the original points and condensor distributor you may have a bad condensor and a bad condensor will perform as you have stated, poor running right up to the point of not starting at all. Or it's possible the points have slipped and are closed, gap between .014 - .019 ( I believe were the specs).

Chrysler Corp. replaced the old distributor for just that reason, reliability. - Don't know everything !

6)   Voltage regulator is a possibility, it may not be allowing enough voltage through.

A weak condenser can certainly cause it to not run correctly, as can worn out points. They're usually sold as a set, so replace both at the same time.

Another item that can cause it to start and not keep running is the ignition ballast.

What's a ballast? you might be asking. It's a part of the points type ignition system that reduces the voltage to the coil to about 9 volts. Many had a bypass that allowed the full 12v to the coil during start-up for easier starts, some were temperature controlled where they allowed a full 12v to the coil, then once they started to warm up, the voltage would decrease, and they can get very hot.

The ballast will be mounted to the firewall, on my '65, it was near the center on the driver's side. It will be a ceramic block with a metal bracket to hold it onto the firewall, and a terminal on each side, one from the battery, and one to the coil. It should be easy to follow the wires to see where each one goes. You can test the ballast with a voltmeter to see if it's allowing voltage through, or an ohmmeter to see if it's reading a certain amount of ohms, or an open circuit. An open circuit means it's broken, of course, and needs replacing, if it allows anywhere from about 8v to 12v, it should be okay.

You'll probably need to learn how to set the points yourself since there's not too many technicians who know how to do that anymore (I've known a few who had never even heard of points before). Here's a link to an article explaining how on Allpar.com http://www.allpar.com/fix/points.html - Mark B

7)   Check your points for burning and pitting, better yet, replace them and the condenser. Also could be the ignition ballast resistor. A symptom of a bad resistor is that the engine will start but as soon as you let go of the key, it dies. Check it with an ohmmeter. A bad one will read very high resistance, or infinity. It's mounted on the firewall, about 2-3 inches long, half inch thick, looks like a white crayon with a wire coming off each end. Chrysler products of the this vintage were notorious for burning these resistors out. Lots of owners used to carry a spare in their glovebox. - Rick

8)   Like mark b said. voltage regulator. black box on the firewall 4"x4" - mjmik1

Question 2
1970 plymouth valiant, too much gas or air?...  I just put a new carburetor on my 1970 Plymouth Valiant and now when I step on the gas it smokes quite a bit especially at high RPMs. I'm sure I don't have the idle speed and fuel/air mix correct if anyone could be any help that would be great.
It's a rebuilt Holley 1920 single barrel carb. The same type that came factory on the car according to the Haynes manual.

Answers
1)   2bbl or 4bbl?
If its 2bbl your jetting, metering or even float settings may be off, and since "new" carbs for that car are not avalible just rebuilds then you have a problem and talk to the rebuilder
IF you have a 4bbl and bought a new "replacement" Holley or Edlelbrock you need to rejet the secondaries or again the metering set up. OR if you installed a bigger CFM carb well now you know what "bigger is not always better" is all about, to much carb for not enough cam or ci.
Idle speed and air fuel mix for off idle has nothing to do with it - rick b

2)   if it,s black smoke then it,s getting too much gas or it could be the choke is closing on you and shutting off the air. adjusting the idle won,t help that and those screws are just idle screws. - bandit_60

3)   More information would be extremely helpful, engine and carburetor size (two/four barrel plus CFM) are necessary to give an accurate answer.

Blue smoke is oil, black smoke is a rich mixture, air/fuel ratio is important, idle speed won't affect mixture at high RPM.

If the engine has not been overhauled and brought back to factory specs, the high RPM smoke is more than likely blue in color (worn rings). If the mixture is too rich (metering or jetting) at high RPMs, excessive gas could be washing the cylinder walls clean of oil film and allow oil past rings as well.

Carburetor problems are difficult to diagnose when you are under the hood and even more difficult to diagnose when you have very little info. - Don't know everything !

4)   Single barrel carb must mean a slant six engine. Sounds like the accelerator pump is set too rich. It's been so long ago I really don't remember how to adjust it. Maybe check on Holley's website? If you bought a rebuilt carb you should have gotten the instructions on how to set and adjust it. - Rick

The 2.2 was available in several models, including Caravan, Daytona, Shadow, Sundance, 600, 400, Lancer, Reliant, Aries, Charger, Omni, New Yorker, etc.

BTW, that motor IS NOT a Mitsubishi motor, it's all Chrysler. - Mark B

Question 3

- Rick

Question 4
what newer Chrysler/dodge has the same motor as the 1982 Chrysler Lebanon?...  i have a 1982 Chrysler Lebanon(with a 2.2 liter engine) that's i need some parts for but since all the older cars are being crushed in the junk yards i cant get the parts.. what newer Chrysler or Dodge has the same(2.2 liter engine)in it so i can get performance parts for it?
it is a 2.2 liter mitsubishi motor which was made in the Usa in 1982

Answers
1)   What the? Performance parts? Why? That engine isn't even close to what is in the newer Dodge/ Chrysler cars. Are you serious about trying to get performance parts for that car? That 2.2L 4 cylinder engine barely gets 85 horse power. - SlapStickBilly

2)   thats a mitsubishi engine,if that helps. - idontgivafork

Question 2
why are people always bashing on pt cuisers?...  i just dont understand my father left me a very nice pt cruiser 01 limited edition when he died he loved this care and before he died wanted to put more power in it i looked around found out it was mopar i have no clue what i can just bolt on to increase the power so i called a few shops to see everytime i called one they just laughed at me and hung up. im just looking for help and maybe a shop that can build up my mopar pt cruiser is that so hard people always make fun of these carse but there really cool.

Answers
1)   Everyone will bash on anything...I really like the turbo pt cruisers.. - Lisa

2)   Good friend is on her second ..... - rick29148

3)   They have a very very low safety rating, their design is...eh... old fashioned, and usually very old people drive them. - Claire

4)   I dunno what's up with people laughing at you. My family had to rent a pt cruiser for a winter trip one-time and it worked just fine! It drove great in ice too as a matter of fact...

I guess if everyone's just laughing at you just look for a shop on-line that specializes in pt cruisers or something... - The Weather Man

5)   There's a lot of web sites out there for PT Cruisers with lots of information, including performance upgrades, repairs, and pretty much anything you can think of. Just do a web search to find some enthusiast sites such as ptcruizer.com, ptdoityourself.net, or any of the other sites for PT enthusiasts.

There's always someone to bash something, they're just haters that feel they have to force their opinion on everyone else. Why don't they like them? Who knows, and who cares. PT's are obviously a good design and well liked by people, otherwise, it wouldn't have lasted this long.

Just ignore them and enjoy your car, it's a nice, versatile vehicle that gets good fuel mileage and hauls lots of cargo inside it. - Mark B

6)   Most of the little cars you see tend to be driven by older people...At least were I live..We have ones that resemble a classic woodie, one with flames and one that a hippie drives that has multiple colors..I have a friend that races his at the dragstrip at a all mopar day...Computer chips, turbos, are just a few hop ups for your ride...Yet I still laugh at these people because it,s not really a mopar as far as mopar standards are...When you think of mopar you think of cuda,s,power wagons and roadrunners...Not a little 4 cylinder car that looks like a mini panel wagon... - Johnny Rotten
